Founded in 1875, Shenandoah is a private, medium-size, moderately-selective university in Winchester, Va., a metropolitan area of approximately 100,000 people. Its main campus is adjacent to Interstate 81 at exit 313B in the northern Shenandoah Valley. Shenandoah University is affiliated with the United Methodist Church.

Academics

  • Shenandoah offers 42 undergraduate degrees and 26 graduate degrees.
    Undergraduate certificates and graduate certificates are also offered in many areas.

The Campus

The university has more than 100 acres of land, and the total campus facilities' space equates to more than 650,000 square-feet. 100,000 square-feet of space is new in 2008.

The Main Campus

  • Shenandoah's main campus is located in historic Winchester, Va.
  • The College of Arts & Sciences, the Harry F. Byrd, Jr. School of Business, Shenandoah Conservatory, student residence halls, the Alson H. Smith Library, and other administrative offices are located on the main campus.

School of Health Professions and
Bernard J. Dunn, Jr., School of Pharmacy

  • The School of Health Professions is located in several facilities - 1) on the campus of the Winchester Medical Center, 2) 333 Cork Street in downtown Winchester, and 3) at the Northern Virginia Campus in Leesburg, Va.

John Kerr Building (downtown Winchester)

  • Shenandoah Conservatory Arts Academy serves nearly 2,000 community students of all ages with programs in music, theatre, dance and the visual arts and is located in the John Kerr Building in downtown Winchester.

Student Life

  • Seven coed, single and double room residence halls
  • Honors and quiet halls are available.
  • 844 undergraduate students live in institutional supported housing.
  • 1038 undergraduates reside in off-campus in non-institutional supported housing.
  • Students may choose from 47 different clubs and organizations.
  • There are 12 intercollegiate, one club sport and six intramural sports.
  • It is highly encouraged that first- and second-year students live on campus.
  • The 40,000 square-foot Brandt Student center, opened in May, 2008, is the hub of student activities.

Admissions (Fall 2010)

  • 1498 undergraduate applications were received for a first-year class of 408 full-time, first-time, degree-seeking freshmen students.
  • They came from seven countries and 22 states and 1 territory (Puerto Rico).
  • 237 came from a Virginia high school.
  • 164 from an out-of-state high school.
  • Six were home-schooled.
  • One entered with a GED.
  • The average high school GPA is 3.34.
  • 55 percent of the freshman scored between a 2.5 and 3.5 high school GPA.
  • 27 percent scored about a 3.75 percent high school GPA
  • 26 percent of the freshmen were in the top 10 percent of their graduating class;
  • 40 percent were in the top 25 percent, and 65 percent were in the top 50 percent.
  • The median SAT score for admitted students was over 1500, including the writing test.
  • 89.95 percent submitted SAT scores. The combined average SAT is 1520 including the new writing test.
  • 23.53 percent submitted ACT scores. The average ACT score is 22.
  • Of 213 transfer students, 115 were from two-year Virginia junior colleges, 23 from Virginia four-year institutions, and 75 from four-year out-of-state institutions.
  • 33.22% of those applying to master's-level programs were accepted.
  • 40% of those applying to master's-level programs including nursing, certificates in health-care management, family nurse practitioner, psychiatric mental health, music therapy, athletic training, occupational therapy, and physician's assistant.
  • 40.93% applying to doctorate-level programs accepted.
  • 30.81% applying to first professional programs accepted. 

Financial Aid

  • Eighty-five percent of students apply for financial aid at Shenandoah University.
  • Shenandoah assisted students in obtaining over $54 million dollars in financial aid for 2009-2010.
  • More than 1,750 students received university-sponsored scholarships and grants totaling over $14 million dollars.
  • 1166 students received an average grant award of $2,521.00 from the VTAG program for 2009-2010.
  • Virginia students are usually eligible for Virginia Tuition Assistance Grant (VTAG). For 2009-2010 the average undergraduate grant is estimated at $3,000; $1,300 for graduate students in health professions.
  • Virginia United Methodist students who are members of the Virginia Annual Conference are usually eligible for a United Methodist scholarship.
  • Selected conservatory students receive talent awards.
  • There are many merit and need-based scholarships available for eligible Shenandoah University undergraduate students.
  • Student must fill out a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) online to be eligible for a full financial aid package.
