English
Language Proficiency Requirements
Shenandoah University has adopted TOEFL (Test of English as
a Foreign Language) as the single
best indicator of a prospective student's language ability.
International students who meet or exceed the University minimum
TOEFL standards indicated below are considered to be sufficiently
proficient in English to succeed in an academic program of
study without needing to take ESL (English as a Second Language)
classes.
- TOEFL scores required for
unconditional admission to an academic program of study
are as follows:

International students who meet all entrance
requirements, except the minimum TOEFL score, are admitted
on a provisional or conditional basis. International
students in this category are given a series of English
language proficiency placement tests during orientation
before classes begin. These tests include a practice
TOEFL, a writing sample, a listening test and an individual
interview with a member of the ESL faculty. The results
of these tests are reviewed with the student and the
student's academic advisor and/or the Dean of the student's
school of study. After this assessment and review process,
the student's schedule of classes is determined.
-
Normally International students who do not
yet meet the English Language Proficiency Requirement
enroll in ESL classes and at the same time enroll in
a limited number of academic classes in the student's
program of study. The following chart is an estimate
of how many ESL classes and how many academic classes
new International students normally enroll for during
their first semester at Shenandoah. ESL students may
enroll for a maximum of 16 credits. (Students wishing
to enroll for more than 15 credits must have the written
approval of the Associate Vice President of International
Programs and the Dean of Director of the student's program
of study..)

- ESL Students who have been
admitted to the University on a provisional basis are
expected to meet the minimum standard of English language
proficiency by the end of their second semester of study.
There are two ways that ESL students may meet the University's
standards: (1) by achieving the minimum admission
TOEFL score for their program of study, or (2) by successfully
completing the Individualized Study Plan of ESL courses
with grades "B" or higher in all classes; by
receiving satisfactory grades and positive recommendation
from faculty members who have had the student in their
academic classes; and the approval of the Dean or Director
of the student's program of study. ESL students
who fail to reach the University English Language Proficiency
Standard within the designated time fram of the Individualized
Study Plan will not be permitted to continue their program
of study until they have met the English Language Proficiency
Standard.
