Course Descriptions

ESL 100 English Conversation I: For students who are speaking at beginning levels with some listening, reading, and writing skills. Emphasis is on vocabulary and present tense, while speaking English in groups. (3 credits)

ESL 101 English Conversation II: For students who have mastered present tense and understand and speak American English. Emphasis is on practicing English skills in groups and past, and future tense will be introduced. (3 credits)

ESL 102 English Conversation III: (Continuation of 101)  For students who need speaking, listening or pronunciation practice.  Students will converse, give speeches, debates and read some literature to obtain skills levels for academic classes. (3 credits)

ESL 105 Reading and Writing I: Development of reading comprehension and written expression for students with limited proficiency in English language. (3 credits)

ESL 106 Reading and Writing II: For students who have mastered ESL 105. Development of reading and writing to prepare for necessary English skills required in academic classes. (3 credits)

ESL 107 Reading and Writing III: For students who have mastered ESL 106.  Development of reading and writing to prepare for necessary English skills required in academic classes. (3 credits)

ESL 110 Academic Bridge I:  This is a course designed for students to improve their vocabulary, writing and cultural awareness.  Students are provided an American teaching assistant to help them with their classes. (3 credits)

ESL 111 Academic Bridge II The course is designed for ESL students who are beginning to take academic classes. The ESL instructor and student teaching assistant support the ESL student in developing and using effective speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills. (3 credits)

ESL 112 Academic Bridge III:  This is the last class in the series and is designed to prepare students to be proficient and successful in academic classes. Students will analyze, summarize, and develop their writing and critical thinking skills. Students will be assigned an American teaching assistant to aid them in their studies. (3 credits)

ESL 113 TOPICS:  This course offers study in specific skill areas.  It is offered with the permission of the instructor (one to three credits).

ESL 115 TOPICS TOEFL Preparation: This course is designed for students with limited English proficiency. The focus is on learning and practicing skills required to improve their English and their scores on the TOEFL. (3 credits)
