English Language Program Events

The English Language Program (ELP) staff, faculty and American student-teaching assistants help the international students here experience many American customs by celebrating holidays and by giving them many opportunities to be involved in the life of our local community.

Throughout the year, ELC students have the opportunity to participate in many different activities such as:

  • Going on hiking and boating day trips.

  • Participating in International Day.

  • Attending functions of the International Club.

  • Watching movies in the International Cross-Cultural Center.

  • Regularly scheduled day trips to surrounding places of interest such as Washington, D.C., Shenandoah National Park and factory outlet shopping centers.

  • Going to ELC Lab Nights. Teaching assistants organize activities such as watching movies, playing board games, computer lessons and watching American TV programs such as "Friends." After watching these programs, the teaching assistants help the students understand the slang and cultural differences they witnessed during the program.
  • Regularly scheduled day trips to surrounding places of interest such as Washington, D.C., Shenandoah National Park and factory outlet shopping centers.
  • Holiday parties for Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year's and the local Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival.
  • Going to a local book fair where students may purchase books at low prices.
  • A private instructional program where students receive one-on-one English lessons with an American student-teaching assistant.
