Facilities and Collections


  The Library collections of Shenandoah University are housed in two facilities, both of recent construction. The Alson H. Smith, Jr. Library, located in the center of the Winchester campus, is the main library facility for the University. The branch Health Sciences Library is located in the Health Professions Building on the grounds of the Winchester Medical Center. Current total holdings number more than 272,000 items, including 116,000 books and bound journals, 13,000 recordings, 15,000 scores, 1,600 videotapes, and 120,000 ERIC documents. The University subscribes to more than 1,200 print periodicals, plus more than 7,700 electronic subscriptions. More than 70 Internet-accessible databases are available through the library web site.

  Subject disciplines represented in the Smith Library are music, business, literature, history, education, psychology, biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, computer science, religion, philosophy and sociology. Most materials in occupational therapy and physical therapy are also located in the Smith Library.

 The Smith Library houses the Media Center, the Macintosh Computer lab, the Children's Literature Center, and most library staff offices. Seating for 300 is available in a variety of spaces over three floors.

 The Health Sciences Library collections include books and serials that support programs in pharmacy, nursing and respiratory care. General medical texts and journals are shelved here as well. Seating for 25 is available.
