Citizen Scholars Program

The mission of the Citizen Scholars Program is "to develop responsible leaders through a challenging and engaging living and learning experience for the most promising students in the College of Arts & Sciences." Citizen Scholars take special seminars together beginning in their first semester at SU. Taught by the college's very best teachers, Citizen Scholar seminars empower students for global citizenship by addressing some of the most significant issues of our times, such as human rights, terrorism, hunger and the AIDS crisis. In addition, Citizen Scholars typically share a floor in a campus residence hall and participate in social, cultural and community service activities beyond the classroom designed to enhance their experience and to fulfill the mission of the program. Admission to the program is by invitation of the dean of the College of Arts & Sciences.

Byrd Distinguished Lecture Series

The Byrd Distinguished Lecture Series was established in 1983 to provide a forum for the presentation, consideration and discussion of critical issues on the local, regional, national and international scene. This series provides students in the Harry F. Byrd, Jr. School of Business to opportunity to hear and question some of the most interesting business, social, educational and governmental leaders of our time.

Still Deciding

Students are not required to declare a major but may choose to enter the Core Studies Program. This program has three main objectives:

To help student identify their academic strengths and interest through coursework in different disciplines;

To help student identify the careers for which their strengths and interest best suit them; and

To guide them toward completion of the General Education and Core Curriculum requirements underlying all majors in the College of Arts & Sciences.

Core Studies students will remain in close contact with an academic advisor who is familiar with the range of academic program and support services available at SU. Students in the Core Studies Program may declare a major at any time but must do so by the end of their sophomore year.

Create Your Own Major

If you are interested in creating your own major, Shenandoah has various interdisciplinary programs that would work for you. Our University Studies Program, Individually Designed Track, allows students with unique or non-traditional educational goals to undertake an individually designed major. Upper-level courses plus an approved program of study are required. The Dean or a designated faculty member advises the student.
