Freshman Admissions Standards

Students are selected by the Office of Admissions on the basis of their abilities, interests and academic preparation as indicated by their application, school records and test results. Since applicants are considered on their own merit, Shenandoah University invites them to supply all evidence to indicate their competence and eagerness to succeed in a demanding and exciting program of study.

To be accepted at Shenandoah University, students must meet the following standards:

Academic Transcript

Applicants should complete a strong college preparatory schedule in high school. SU requires:

  • Four years of English
  • Three years of math (algebra I, algebra II and geometry)
  • Two years of science (including one lab)
  • Two years of social studies
  • Two years of a foreign language

Other distributions of academics may be appropriate for some curricula and will be evaluated on an individual basis.

Average GPA for the admitted freshman class of 2011 was 3.43. 

Standardized Tests

Applicants should take either the SAT or the ACT standardized test. We suggest students take one of the exams at the end of the junior year and again during the late fall of the senior year of high school. Applicants must request the College Board (SAT) or ACT, Inc. (ACT) to send your test scores directly to Shenandoah University.

Shenandoah's ACT Code is: 4396 (American College Testing Program examination)

Average SAT for the admitted freshman class of 2011 was 1032. (math & critical reading sections only)

Letter of Recommendation

Applicants are required to submit 1 letter of recommendation. We recommend this letter come from a high school teacher, guidance counselor or private instructor. Letters are accepted from work or volunteer supervisors as well.

Guidance Counselors are welcome to submit the Guidance Counselor Recommendation Form.
