Shenandoah University seeks students with
inquiring and creative minds who will profit from a Shenandoah experience in an atmosphere
of freedom with responsibility.
Students are selected by the Office of Admissions on the
basis of their ability, interests, and academic preparation as indicated by their
application, school records, and test results. Since applicants are considered on their
own merit, Shenandoah University invites them to supply all evidence to indicate their
competence and eagerness to deal with a demanding and exciting Shenandoah program of
study.
Admission to Shenandoah University is competitive. The
number of new students admitted each year is limited by the available residence hall and
classroom space, instructional personnel, and budgetary resources. The Director of
Admissions is authorized to accept applicants who meet the published admission
requirements after examining their admissions file in accordance with policies approved by
the institution. Shenandoah University admits those applicants who seem to be best
qualified to benefit from the educational opportunities offered by the institution.
Entrance Requirements
A candidate for regular admission as a full-time freshman
must have completed at least 15 units of college entrance credit, have a high school
diploma or an equivalency certificate acquired through General Educational Development
(GED) examination (see "Applicants without a high school diploma" below), and
have satisfactory scores on either the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) or the American
College Testing Program examination (ACT). Applicants should take one of these tests in
the spring of their junior year and again at the earliest possible date during the fall of
their senior year of high school.
The high school transcript should indicate courses pursued,
grades earned, grade point average, and credits amounting to at least 15 units earned in
grades 9 to 12. It is recommended that the 15 units of academic course work include: four
units of English, three units of mathematics, two units of science (including one
laboratory science), two units of social studies, and two units of a foreign language.
Other distributions may be appropriate for some curricula and will be evaluated on an
individual basis by the Admissions Office. Conservatory applicants are also required to
successfully complete an on-campus or regional audition, meeting the specific requirements
as outlined in the University's "Audition Guidelines." Copies are available from
the Admissions Office.
The most heavily weighted factor in the applicant's total
profile is the actual academic performance, as indicated by the high school transcript,
particularly for the junior and senior years. Because class rank is a relative factor, it
is not considered in the admission decision.
Applicants for admission to Shenandoah University are
evaluated in three major areas:
- Previous high school or college records or both
- Results of the SAT or ACT examinations
- For Conservatory applicants only, the result of the audition
Students seeking admission to the Bachelor of Science in
Nursing curriculum in the School of Health Professions must meet the following
requirements: (Also consult the Nursing section of this catalog.)
- Be a graduate of a state-accredited associate degree or
diploma program in nursing. An official copy of the transcript should be sent to the
Admissions Office at Shenandoah University by all colleges or diploma schools attended.
(Note on transcript or inform the Admissions Office at Shenandoah if name on transcript is
different from that appearing on the application for admission, i.e., maiden name.)
- Hold a current license to practice as a registered nurse in
Virginia. A copy of license showing license number should accompany application for
admission.
- Have a minimum grade point average of 2.500 on a 4.000
scale. Students with less than a 2.500 GPA will be considered on an individual basis.
Admission of High School Graduates
Most applicants seek admission during the first semester of
the senior year in high school to enter Shenandoah University the following summer or
fall. Procedures for such admission are presented in this section. A student who intends
to enter directly after high school graduation should request the necessary forms from the
Admissions Office.
- Application for admission must be made on an application
form provided by the Admissions Office. The application, carefully completed and signed by
the applicant and a parent or guardian, should be returned to the Admissions Office as
soon as possible. The application must be accompanied by a non-refundable application fee
of $20.00. The application fee should be submitted by a check or money order payable to
Shenandoah University. The application fee is not credited to tuition and fees.
- Applicants must ask their high school guidance counselor or
principal to send an official transcript of their high school records and SAT or ACT test
scores to the Director of Admissions, Shenandoah University, 1460 University Drive,
Winchester, Virginia 22601-5195. Credentials submitted by the applicant are not considered
official.
- If the SAT or ACT scores are not included on the high school
transcript, the applicant should request the College Entrance Examination Board to send
them directly to Shenandoah University.
- Conservatory applicants must satisfactorily complete an
audition prior to the admission decision, except those students entering the piano
technology or technical theatre curricula. In the audition, each applicant must
demonstrate an appropriate level of technical facility in one performance medium. Students
desiring to study piano technology or technical theatre are required to schedule an
interview with the appropriate division chairman. Specific audition requirements are found
in the description of each curriculum and in the "Audition Guidelines" available
from the Admissions Office. Students do not audition for study with a particular
Conservatory teacher. The faculty member conducting the audition is a representative of
the department and while students will have an opportunity to express a preference, it is
not guaranteed that they will study in the studio of the person who does the auditioning.
When an application is complete, the applicant will usually
be notified of the admission decision within three weeks by the Director of Admissions.
For additional information, see heading Notification of Admissions
Decision in this section.
Admission of Transfer Students
Persons transferring from other accredited institutions of
post secondary education may be admitted to advanced standing upon presentation of the
following items to the Office of Admissions: A student who intends to enter as a transfer
student should request the necessary forms from the Admissions Office.
- Application for admission must be made on an application
form provided by the Admissions Office. The application, carefully completed and signed by
the applicant and a parent or guardian, should be returned to the Admissions Office as
soon as possible. The application must be accompanied by a non-refundable application fee
of $30.00. The application fee should be submitted by a check or money order payable to
Shenandoah University. The application fee is not credited to tuition and fees.
- Transfer applicants must submit evidence of good standing at
the college last attended and an official transcript of credits earned at all
institution(s) previously attended, showing entrance credits accepted and results of
standardized tests administered. It is the responsibility of the transfer applicant to
have official transcripts of all academic work and evidence of honorable dismissal
forwarded directly to the Office of Admissions. Credentials submitted by the applicant are
not considered official. For admission as a transfer student without qualification, the
applicant must be in good standing and eligible to return to his former institution. Any
other special admissions shall be considered probationary and shall be governed by all
restrictions associated with that classification.
Candidates for admission as transfer students who have been
suspended from other institutions shall not be considered for admission until they have
been out of college for a period of one regular semester.
Shenandoah University grants transfer credit based on the
policy headed "transfer credit" in the Academic Policies section of this catalog
(see below).Subject to the general conditions governing the transfer of credit, Shenandoah
shall recognize a maximum of 17 hours of USAFI course work provided such credit is
recommended by the American Council of Education publication: "A Guide to the
Evaluation of Educational Experiences in the Armed Forces."
For transfer students in a music curriculum, proficiency in
applied music is evaluated following the first semester of study at Shenandoah University.
When an application is complete, the applicant will usually
be notified of the admission decision within three weeks by the Director of Admissions.
For additional information, see heading Notification of Admissions
Decision in this section.
Readmission of Former Students
Former students seeking readmission must secure an
application from the Director of Admissions. Application must be made on a form provided
by the Admissions Office.
Former students who were in good academic and good social
standing may be readmitted upon completion of the appropriate forms in the Admissions
Office. Former students, however, may be denied readmission on the basis of an outstanding
and unresolved debt to Shenandoah University.
Former students who were not in good academic or good
social standing may be readmitted only upon completion of the appropriate forms in the
Admissions Office, and approval of the Admissions Evaluation Committee. In addition, a
non-refundable readmission fee of $30 is required of all students seeking readmission
after being suspended or dismissed for either academic or disciplinary reasons. The
readmission fee should be submitted by check or money order payable to Shenandoah
University, along with the application for readmission. The readmission fee is not
credited to basic tuition and fees.
Admission of High School Seniors
Qualified seniors in area high schools who will not be
taking a full academic load in their high school senior year can apply to Shenandoah for
admission as part-time students. Under this program, students are permitted, with the
approval of high school officials, to undertake course work at Shenandoah University
concurrently with course work undertaken at their high school.
Under certain conditions, credit earned at Shenandoah
University may be applicable to graduation requirements from Virginia high schools. Credit
and grades earned become part of the student's permanent academic record at Shenandoah
University. Students applying for this program must submit the regular application for
admission, the non-refundable application fee of $30, a high school transcript, and the
results of the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) or the American College Test (ACT).
Admission After the Junior Year
This program, in which the student enters as a full-time
freshman after the junior year in high school, is designed for a small number of
exceptionally qualified students who have completed almost all of the 15 credits required
for regular admission. To be considered, a student must have all required credits in
mathematics and science. Most commonly, the student will have at the end of the junior
year only one unit in English and one in social science to complete.
Students applying for this program need all the materials
required of a candidate for regular admission, and, in addition, the high school counselor
or principal or both will be asked to speak directly to the question of the student's
maturity, academic ability, personality, sense of purpose, and ability to handle
responsibility independently. Credit and grades earned become part of the student's
permanent academic record at Shenandoah University.
The admission procedure is the same as for those students
seeking regular admission, except that generally students seeking admission after the
junior year submit their application during the spring of their junior year in high
school. Students applying for this program must submit the regular application for
admission, the non-refundable application fee of $30, an official high school transcript,
and the results of the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) or the American College Test (ACT).

Proficiency Requirements for Admission
A. Regular (Unconditional) Admission of non-native English
Speakers (NNES)
Undergraduate Students
Shenandoah University’s English Language Proficiency requirements
for
unconditional admission of NNES undergraduate students may be
satisfied in any
one of the following ways. (The date of taking standardized tests
should not be
more than 12 months prior to the date of enrollment.)
For Business/Arts & Sciences/Health Professions:
a.Test of English as a Foreign Language
(TOEFL) paper-based test: score of 527 or
higher; computer-based test score of 197 or higher.
b.The Sakae Institute of Study Abroad (SISA)
test score of 527 or higher.
c. Successful completion of at least two years
of full-time study in a postsecondary
institution in an English-speaking country in which English
is the
language of instruction.
For Conservatory:
TOEFL Paper-based Test score of 500; Computer-based
TOEFL
Test score of 173; or SISA score of 500 or higher.
Entering students who meet the Shenandoah University’s
ESL requirement as
outlined above are not required to enroll in ESL courses. However,
such students
may elect ESL study to improve their English language skills.
B. Provisional or Special Admission of NNES Undergraduate
Students
Undergraduate students with scores in the following ranges may
be granted
provisional admission and begin their undergraduate programs,
however, they must
enroll for at least 6 hours of ESL each semester until they achieve
the TOEFL
score required by the program.
Business/Arts & Sciences/Health Professions: SISA
or TOEFL paper-based test score
of 500 to 525 or Computer-based test score of 173 to 195.
For Conservatory: SISA or TOEFL paper-based test
score of 450 to 497 or
computer-based test score of 133 to 170.
Undergraduate students must meet all ESL requirements within one
calendar year
of initial enrollment at Shenandoah University, or prior to graduation,
whichever
comes first. Failure to meet this requirement may result in suspension
from the
University.
Entering undergraduate students who do not meet the minimum requirements
specified above may be admitted only as special students to study
ESL until
reaching the levels specified for provisional admission to a program.
Specific guidelines for completing ESL requirements may be obtained
from the
Office of International Programs.
- It is important
that detailed financial information indicating the source of funds
to
pay for a full academic year of college expenses be included with
the application.
Shenandoah provides appropriate financial documentation forms
to each international applicant that must be completed, certified,
and returned to the Office
of Admissions prior to admission and the issuance of the I-20
form.This information
is also required by the United States Immigration and Naturalization
Service (INS).
Conservatory applicants, in selected programs of study, may complete
specific
audition requirements by submitting an audio or video tape if
travel to the
Winchester campus or a regional audition site is not feasible.
When an application is complete, the applicant will usually
be notified of the admission decision within three weeks by the Director of Admissions.
For additional information, see heading Notification of Admissions
Decision in this section.
An I-20 form, for use in obtaining a student visa (F-1
status), will be signed and mailed by the Admissions Office after an international student
has been issued a letter of acceptance and the required advance tuition deposit has been
received. It is extremely important that international students receive their F-1 visa
from the U.S. Consulate Office in their native country prior to their arrival in the
United States. A visa for F-1 student status is virtually impossible to obtain once an
international student leaves his or her native country.
Inquiries regarding financial aid should be directed to the
University's Financial Aid Office. Financial aid for international students is extremely
limited since federal and state sources are unavailable. International students should
seek to obtain educational funds from their native country and should not rely on a
significant amount of aid being available from Shenandoah University. A financial aid
publication for international students is available from the Admissions Office on request.
Special Admissions
Admission of Applicants Without a High School Diploma
Applicants may be considered for admission on the basis of
the General Educational Development (GED) examination. Shenandoah University does not
administer this examination. Interested applicants should consult the Guidance Department
of a nearby high school for information about when and where the examinations can be
taken. A standard score battery average of 45, with a total standard score of 225 and no
individual score below 35 is generally required for admission to Shenandoah University. An
interview with a member of the Admissions staff is recommended.
Advanced Standing
Applicants for admission who have completed advanced work
in high school may apply for advanced standing in certain courses at Shenandoah
University. Each case will be considered individually on its merits. The level of advanced
standing shall be determined by the department in which advanced standing is requested.
Students granted advanced standing, are required to enroll in other courses in lieu of
courses from which they have been exempted.
Advanced Placement
Students who have been admitted to Shenandoah University or
who are being considered for admission may apply to the College Entrance Examination Board
for permission to take one or more of the Advanced Placement Tests. The Admissions Office
at Shenandoah should be informed of the student's intentions early in the senior year of
high school. It is suggested that students interested in the Advanced Placement Tests
discuss the matter with their high school guidance counselor or principal.
High school graduates who present acceptable scores on the
College Board Advanced Placement Test and who have approval of their School Dean may
receive advanced placement with credit. Credit granted on the basis of the Advanced
Placement Test is treated as transfer work and is subject to the University's transfer
policy. See "Transfer credit" in the Academic Policies Section below.
Deferred Enrollment
Upon written request, an accepted applicant may have one
year to exercise the option of enrolling. Deferred enrollment is subject to the admission
requirements in force at the time the initial decision was made and is predicated upon the
fact that the student will not enroll at another institution before enrolling at
Shenandoah University. A student who enrolls at another institution before enrolling at
Shenandoah University must reapply as a transfer student.
The student will be subject to the rules, regulations, and
financial charges in effect at time of enrollment. Students who elect to postpone
enrollment will be asked to submit the advance tuition deposit and a summary of work
experience.
Summer Session Admission
Application to a summer session is the same as that
required for regular admission with the following exceptions:
- Visiting students from other colleges are required to submit
only the application form and the application fee.
- Public school teachers desiring summer courses only for
certification purposes are required to submit only the application form and the
application fee.
Types of admission
At the discretion of the Director of Admissions, applicants
accepted as students at Shenandoah, whether entering as freshmen or transfer students, are
classified as (1) degree or non-degree, and (2) as full-time or part-time, and are
admitted in one of the following categories:
- 1. Admission in good standing
- 2. Admission on conditional acceptance
- 3. Admission as a special student
- Admission in Good Standing
- An applicant who presents an acceptable academic record,
acceptable test scores, and a satisfactory audition or interview (when applicable), is
admitted in good standing. Such students may enroll in a full program of studies as
outlined in the catalog.
- Admission on Conditional Acceptance
- If the previous scholastic record of an applicant is
slightly below the standards for regular admission, but personal recommendations, test
scores, audition or interview (when applicable), seem to indicate a probability of success
at the college level, a student may be admitted on conditional acceptance. Students
admitted conditionally may enroll in no more than fourteen credit hours during their first
semester of enrollment. The student's faculty advisor will decide which courses the
student should take. Students admitted conditionally may take longer to complete their
academic program because of this restriction. The student's academic achievement will be
governed by the University's policy on Academic Standing. See "Academic
Standing" in the Academic Policies section below.
- Admission as a Special Student
- Applicants for admission as special students are most often
those who are interested not in a degree but in a specific course, those who did not
follow an academic program in high school, or students at other institutions who will earn
credits to transfer back to their own institutions. Generally, a special student is
considered to be enrolled part-time.
- Special students are not enrolled in a certificate or degree
program at Shenandoah University, but are held to the same academic standard and judged in
the same way as students who are enrolled in a certificate or degree program.
- Occasionally, a special student will later apply for
admission as a degree-seeking student. In that case, regular procedure is followed. Once
enrolled as a special student, a student cannot change status in that semester. Students
may not count more than 30 credit hours earned as a special student toward a certificate
or degree program.
- Special students are not eligible for financial aid.
Admission as a Continuing Education Student
Continuing education students apply for admission through
the Continuing Education office. Regular admissions processes apply depending on whether
the student seeks admission as a degree-seeking or special student.
Applicants are usually notified by letter approximately
three weeks after the their admission file is complete. Dates by which an applicant must
submit an advance tuition deposit are stipulated in the letter of acceptance, and vary
depending on the time of year the offer of acceptance is granted.
For boarding students, the tuition and housing deposit is
$300. For full-time commuting students, the tuition deposit is $200. For part-time
commuting students, the tuition deposit is $100. Upon receipt of the advance tuition
deposit by the Admissions Office signifying acceptance of Shenandoah's offer of admission,
the Student Affairs Office will send orientation information to the student. Residential
students will be confirmed for on-campus housing on a space-available basis in order of
receipt of the tuition deposit. A check or money order should be made payable to
Shenandoah University and mailed to the Business Office. Tuition and housing deposits are
not usually refundable; however, each request will be considered in light of extenuating
circumstances. Refund requests must be made in writing to the Director of Admissions.
The student's notification of acceptance is obviously
tentative and conditioned (when applicable) by the applicant's subsequent graduation from
high school or satisfactory completion of the current college semester. Applicants must
request the proper person to send final high school or college transcripts to the
Admissions Office. Credentials submitted by the applicant are not considered official.
These records should include confirmation of graduation from high school or evidence of
good standing at the termination of the college semester.
