Annette Amerman '97 returned to the SU campus on April 28 to speak with students about her career as a historian as well as internship opportunities available through the federal government. Dr. Jim Bryant, history professor in the SU College of Arts & Sciences, invited students from many different programs to participate. Dr. Catherine Tisinger, Amerman’s former professor and mentor, also attended. Amerman is employed as one of 11 historians with the Marine Corps History Division located at Marine Corps Base Quantico. Since graduating from SU, Amerman has worked in a variety of historical positions with organizations such as USO World Headquarters, Wyoming Territorial Park and the Shenandoah Center for Heritage and the Environment. She is a member of the Society for History in the federal government and the National Council on Public History. She has served as a judge for the Northern Virginia Regional National History Day competition and other historical sites. Recent articles have been published in Naval History Magazine and the Marine Corps’ historical journal Fortitudine. A native of the Finger Lakes Region of upstate New York, Amerman was the recipient of Shenandoah University’s 1997 Bartley History Award. She currently serves on the Shenandoah University Alumni Association Board of Directors. She is pursuing a master’s degree in history at George Mason University.

Charles A. Flynn-McIver '88 and his wife Angie founded the North Carolina Stage Company in Asheville, N.C., in 2002. Now in its sixth season as Asheville's only professional theater, North Carolina Stage Company presents exciting, professional theater in the heart of downtown Asheville. They were voted Best Local Theatre by readers of Mountain Xpress its diverse season of gripping dramas, classics, family plays and outrageous comedies. It was also named North Carolina's Professional Theatre of the Year of 2006 by the North Carolina Theatre Conference. This year marks its first year as a bonded theatre with Actors’ Equity Association. Arts education is an integral part of North Carolina Stage Company's mission. Since 2001, it has served 3,545 students in Western N.C. through its classroom residencies and more than 15,000 students through its NEA-funded school tour of “A Midsummer Night's Dream.” The theatre conduct’s masterclasses that are fast paced, challenging courses taught by actors and directors from their main-stage productions. Flynn-McIver received a master's of fine arts in acting from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1993. He returned to North Carolina after working as an actor for nine years in New York City. Charles and Angie have two children, Nora and Cameron.
