Third Day at Gettysburg
16th Annual McCormick Civil War Institute
October 21 - 22, 2011
The founder of Shenandoah University's Civil War Institute, Hugh D. McCormick, gave our Institute an undying connection with the Battle of Gettysburg: his father fought in the Battle, and survived Pickett's Charge. On October 21 & 22, 2011, the McCormick Civil War Institute returns to Gettysburg for the day of Pickett's Charge, July 3, 1863.
On Friday, October 21, Institute Director, Brandon H. Beck's opening lecture will offer a new perspective on the entire Battle, and is place in our history and memory. Based on a lecture he gave at the Smithsonian Institute, his opening address will set the stage for our guide, Professor Jonathan Noyalas, Director of the Center for Civil War History at Lord Fairfax Community College. Professor Noyalas's tour on Saturday, October 22, takes us over the ground at Spangler's Meadow, Culp's Hill, and then to the North Carolina and Virginia Monuments along Confederate Avenue on Seminary Ridge. From there, we will follow in the footsteps of Hugh McCormick's father in the great Charge across the fields to Cemetery Hill. We'll cover the fighting in the center of the Union line. As always, Noyalas and Beck will describe the epic in words of those who fought there, Union and Confederate, and in the words of great historians and literary masters - Stephen Vincent Benet, William Faulkner, and Douglas Southall Freeman. At the end, Noyalas will draw on his own groundbreaking research in Civil War Memory to underscore what Gettysburg has meant to our nation.
The Civil War Institute offers a superb orientation, an unforgettable tour, in a relaxed social atmosphere. From Friday's opening lecture and banquet to the Saturday tour (lunch served) this year's tour continues our tradition of bringing great history to life.
