Men's Basketball

WINCHESTER , Va. – The SU men’s basketball team fell to 2-2 in Dixie Conference play Saturday afternoon with a double overtime 84-79 loss to the NC Wesleyan Battling Bishops. Shenandoah (6-8, 2-2) had won its last two Dixie Conference games before falling to the Bishops (9-5, 2-2).

Despite shooting an anemic 25 for 84 (29.8 percent), the hosts had a chance to win the contest at the end of the first overtime as junior Tyson Thompson ( Keysville , Va. /Randolph-Henry) held the ball for the final shot. Unfortunately, Thompson’s eight-footer in the lane came up just short, leaving the contest tied at 70 and sending the two teams to a second overtime period.

After SU scored the initial basket of the second OT, Wesleyan went on a 6-1 run over a period of 3:14 to take a 78-74 lead with 1:31 to play. After Thompson hit a trey to bring the hosts back to within one, SU could get no closer as the Bishops missed just one shot in the rest of the contest.

Coach Rob Harris’ club did have two chances to tie in the final seconds, but sophomore Chad Brashears ( Hagerstown , Md. / St. Maria Goretti) missed two three-point attempts.

Senior Ronald Merriwether led all scorers with a game and career high 32 points to go along with 15 rebounds. Sophomore John Tigney ( Winchester , Va./James Wood) and junior Michael Atkins ( Winchester , Va. /Sherando) both added 14 points while sophomore Halston Camp (Harrisonburg, Va./Harrisonburg) pulled down a career high 16 rebounds.

Atkins had another double-double for SU with 13 boards.

Bradley Blue led the visitors with 31 pints while Keith Sudler had 15 and Donta Jenkins 14.

Women’s Basketball

WINCHESTER , Va. - The Shenandoah University women's basketball team was once again unsuccessful in its quest to grab its first Dixie win of the season, falling to N.C. Wesleyan 63-53.

The Hornets (2-10, 0-4) took a five point lead in the first two minutes of the game before the Bishops (8-4, 4-0) gained their composure and went on a 12-0 run to take a 14-7 lead midway through the first half.  Despite tying the game one final time with 5:04 to go before the break, Shenandoah found itself down by 15 at the intermission as Wesleyan shot a sizzling 53.3 percent from the field.

SU was able to cut Wesleyan’s advantage to eight on one occasion in the final 20 minutes, but could get no closer.

The Bishops' Misty Carneal led all scorers with 20 points while also grabbing six rebounds.

Senior Misty Towery ( Collinsville , Va. /Prince Edward) led the hosts with 10. Seven of those points came in the first half.
