Hornets Buzz Mens Basketball
Head Coach: Rob Harris
Overall Record: 6-10 Dixie
Conference Record: 0-4
The men's basketball team
lost two of its three games this past week to
move to 6-10 overall and 0-4 in Dixie Conference
play. The men opened play on Wednesday by
snapping a six-game losing streak with a 72-67
overtime victory over Villa Julie College. SU
held double digit advantages in both the first
and second halves of the contest but needed a
stickback from sophomore Michael Atkins (Winchester,
Va./Sherando) with two seconds remaining to send
the game into overtime. The Hornets then won the
first overtime game of the Rob Harris era by
outscoring the Mustangs 12-7 in the extra period.
Atkins led four players in double figures with a
career high 19 points; he also pulled down 10
rebounds to record his second double-double of
the season. Atkins was joined in double figures
in the scoring column by Ted Davis (Clifton Forge,
Va./Allegheny), Craig Shelton (Charlottesville,
Va./Charlottesville) and Jacob Bates (Berryville,
Va./Clarke County) with 14, 12 and 10,
respectively. Junior Fred Cooke (Wheaton, Md./Albert
Einstein) helped the cause defensively with a
career high six blocked shots. SU completed the
week with a pair of Dixie Conference losses, 75-63
to Methodist on Saturday and 75-57 to Greensboro
on Sunday. Harris' club held a two point lead
with just under seven minutes to play in Saturday's
contest with the Monarchs, but saw Methodist
score 19 of the final 24 points of the game to
take the 12 point victory. Junior Ronald
Merriweather (Frankfurt, Germany/Giessen American)
had 15 and Davis 14 in the losing cause. The
Hornets ran into a hot Greensboro squad in Sunday's
defeat; the Pride made eight of its nine 3-pointers
in the first 20 minutes of play to help
themselves to an 11 point halftime advantage.
Freshman Chad Brashears (Hagerstown, Md./St.
Maria Goretti) was the only SU player in double
figures. He had 14 points. This week the men
complete the first round of Dixie play with home
games against Ferrum on Thursday and Averett on
Saturday. Both games are doubleheaders with the
women.

The women's basketball team
lost both of its games this past week to fall

84-46 loss to Methodist College. Senior Carrie
Weimer (Williamsport, Md./Williamsport) had 10
points to lead all SU scorers in the losing
effort. Sophomore Adina Trammel (Leesburg, Va./Loudoun

season on Sunday at Greensboro, but it was not
enough as the Hornets fell 74-56. Trammel had 14
points and 12 rebounds to go along with seven
assists in the loss. This week, the women play a
pair of Dixie doubleheaders with the men. SU
