| Basketball Sweeps Ferrum WINCHESTER, Va. - The SU men's and
women's basketball teams achieved their first
Dixie Conference doubleheader sweep of the season
Thursday night, defeating Ferrum College 80-69 in
the women's game and 93-70 in the men's contest.
The doubleheader sweep is
the first for the two squads since February 5,
2000, when the women defeated NC Wesleyan 67-45
and the men followed with a 76-72 victory.
In the women's game, SU (7-7,
2-3) gained its second straight Dixie home win
with a 80-69 victory. After entering the
lockerroom tied at 36, the Hornets held Ferrum (4-12,
2-3) to just 31.3 percent shooting (10-32) in the
final 20 minutes while forcing 16 turnovers to
take the easy win.
Coach Kathy Orsini had four
players score in double figures, led by senior
Carrie Weimer (Williamsport, Md./Williamsport).
Weimer had 16 points, juniors Wendy Legge (Stephens
City, Va./Sherando) and Rosaline Fisher (Greenscastle,
Pa./Hagerstown CC) 15 and 12, respectively, and
sophomore Adina Trammel (Leesburg, Va./Loudoun
County) 11. Sophomore Christine LaTouche (Elkton,
Va./Spotswood) had a game high 12 rebounds for
the Hornets, who grabbed 51 rebounds on the night.
The men capped the night
with their strongest performance of the second
semester, winning 93-70 for the first Dixie
Conference victory of the Rob Harris era.
Shenandoah (7-10, 1-4) dominated the boards
against the Panthers (5-11, 0-5) pulling down 51
rebounds to Ferrum's 28 on the night.
After leading by as much as
14 in the first half, SU outscored FC 46-28 in
the second half while shooting a sizzling 19-33 (57.6
percent) from the field. Like the women, Harris'
club had four players in double figures. Senior
Josh Benton (Bunker Hill, W. Va./Musselman) had a
game high 17, while Ronald Merriwether (Frankfurt,
Germany) had 15, senior Ted Davis (Clifton Forge,
Va./Allegheny) 14 and sophomore Michael Atkins (Winchester,
Va./Sherando) 10. Merriwether and Davis were also
tops on the boards with eight each.

Both teams are off until
Saturday, when they host Averett College in
another Dixie doubleheader. Game time for the
women is 2:00 and the men are scheduled for a 4:00
