DANVILLE, Va. - The SU men's and women's
basketball teams achieved their first doubleheaders sweep of the
season Saturday afternoon as the women defeated Averett 78-62 before
the men romped 75-46.
For the SU women (4-14, 1-8), it was the first
conference win of the season. The Hornets stormed back from an early
17-3 deficit to trail just five, 37-32, at the break.
Coach Kathy Orsini's women stepped it up coming
out of the lockerroom, going on a 19-4 run to start the second against
the second against AU (3-15, 2-7). The Hornets never trailed again and
led by as much as 18 before settling for their biggest victory of the
year.
Senior Rosaline Fisher (Greencastle,
Pa./Hagerstown CC) led with a game high 22 while Wendy Legge (Stephens
City, Va./Sherando) added 15 and Jenny Driver (Staunton, Va./Fort
Defiance) 14.
Freshman Jenny Gray (Sumerduck, Va./Liberty)
turned in her most solid performance of the season, just missing the
first triple-double in school history. Gray had 14 points, 10 rebounds
and a game high nine assists as she played all 40 minutes.

The women continue this road trip with a Super
Bowl Sunday date at Washington & Lee. Game time in Lexington is 2:00.
The men's game was not nearly as close as the
women's; the SU men broke open a close game at the first media timeout
to lead by 16 by halftime and then cruise to the 75-46 victory.
Shenandoah (10-9, 6-3) surpassed last season's
win total with the victory, and also completed its first season sweep
of Averett (3-17, 1-8) since the 1995-96 season.
With the score tied at 13 with just over 12
minutes remaining in the first, SU went on a 10-3 over a span of the
next 4:54 seconds that effectively ended the game. After taking a
31-20 lead on a Ronald Merriwether (Frankfurt, Germany/Giessen
American) layup with 3:53 left, the Hornets lead never fell into
single digits again.
Merriwether continued his Player of the Year
candidacy with 21 points while Tyson Thompson (Keysville, Va./Randolph
Henry) had 12 points and five assists.
Michael Atkins (Winchester, Va./Sherando) had 12
points, seven rebounds and a career high eight blocks to dominate
inside.
