Hornets Buzz Mens Basketball
Head Coach: Rob Harris
Overall Record: 7-13 Dixie
Conference Record: 1-7
The men's basketball team
lost both of its contests this past week to fall
to 7-13 overall and 1-7 in Dixie Conference
action on the year. On Saturday, the men started
a two-game weekend road trip with a 102-79 loss
to No. 10 in the nation Christopher Newport
University. After shooting over 50 percent from
the field in a loss to Averett last week, the
Hornets shooting woes returned against the
Captains; SU shot just 39.7 percent (27 for 68)
in the loss. Junior Ronald Merriwether (Frankfurt,
Germany/Giessen American) led with 23 points
while classmate Jacob Bates (Berryville, Va./Clarke
County) added 15, senior Ted Davis (Clifton Forge,
Va./Allegheny) 11 and Michael Atkins (Winchester,
Va./Sherando) 10 points to go along with a team
high 11 rebounds. On Sunday, the Hornets held a
seven point second half advantage but could not
hold on as NC Wesleyan took the 93-88 victory.
Shenandoah was whistled for 18 second-half fouls
and three technicals as the Bishops shot 42 free
throws to the Hornets' 16. Davis has 24 points,
Merriwether 21, Craig Shelton (Charlottesville,
Va./Charlottesville) 15 and freshman Chad
Brashears (Hagerstown, Md./St. Maria Goretti) 10
in the defeat. This week, SU has two home games.
The men will host Methodist on Thursday and
Greensboro on Saturday in a pair of Dixie
Conference doubleheaders with the women. Game
times are 7:30 on Thursday and 4:00 on Saturday.

Overall Record: 8-10 Dixie
Conference Record: 2-6
The women's basketball team
won one of three games this past week to move to
8-10 overall and 2-6 in Dixie Conference play. SU
began the week with a 62-51 victory over Villa
Julie College on Tuesday. The Hornets overcame a
slow start to take a 31-17 halftime lead and
cruised to their sixth straight victory over the
Lady Mustangs behind 19 points from junior Wendy
Legge (Stephens City, Va./Sherando). Senior
Carrie Weimer (Williamsport, Md./Williamsport)
turned in her fourth double-double of the season
with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Over the weekend
the women fell 75-59 to Christopher Newport on
Saturday and 58-51 to NC Wesleyan on Sunday. The
Saturday loss was the first in three years at CNU
and came despite 13 from Weimer, 11 from Legge
