Basketball Swept in Dixie Doubleheader

WINCHESTER, Va. - The Shenandoah University men's and women's basketball team were once again swept in a Dixie Conference doubleheader, dropping two contests to Methodist College Thursday evening at Shingleton Gymnasium. SU lost the women's contest 63-49, while the men dropped a 75-63 decision.

In the women's contest, SU (8-11, 2-7) took a 24-23 lead into the halftime lockerroom as junior Wendy Legge (Stephens City, Va./Sherando) had eight of her 10 points on the evening in the first 20 minutes of play. League leading Methodist (14-7, 9-1) refused to yield however, outscoring SU 40-25 after the intermission to complete the sweep of the season series.

Sophomore Adina Trammel (Leesburg, Va./Loudoun County) had 12 points to go long with Legge's 10.

The SU men dropped their fourth straight game to the Monarchs as MC shot a sizzling 18 for 27 (66.7 percent) in the second half to erase an eight-point halftime deficit and take the 75-63 victory. The Hornets (7-14, 1-8) led by as much as 12 in the contest and were leading 59-51 with 6:48 to play before MC (14-7, 7-3) went on a 24-3 run to close out the contest. In the space of 2:54, Coach Rob Harris' club went from up six at 61-55 to down 10 at 71-61.

Junior Ronald Merriwether (Frankfurt, Germany/Giessen American) had 21 points and 12 rebounds, while sophomore Michael Atkins (Winchester, Va./Sherando) added 12 points and a game-high 13 boards. Junior Jacob Bates (Berryville, Va./Clarke County) also was in double figures with 10 points.

Both teams are in action again on Saturday when they host Greensboro College in the final Dixie Conference doubleheader of the season. Game time is 2:00 for the women and 4:00 for the men.
