ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. - The SU women's basketball team fell to 4-17 overall and 1-10 in Dixie Conference play Saturday afternoon with a 54-45 loss to conference co-leader NC Wesleyan.

Wesleyan (14-6, 9-2) achieved the victory despite shooting just 16 for 61 (26.2 percent) for the contest. Shenandoah outshot the Bishops in both the first half and for the game but saw NCWC make 21 of 27 free throws to just 5 of 10 for the Hornets.

Sophomore Jenny Driver (Staunton, Va./Fort Defiance) had 11 points while classmate Bridget Robbins (Baker, W. Va./East Hardy) added 10.

Box Score

The women are in action again Sunday afternoon with a Dixie Conference contest at Chowan. Game time is 1:00.

Men's Basketball

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. - The SU men gave it a valiant effort Saturday afternoon, but ran out of time as NC Wesleyan took a 69-64 victory.

The five point win is the second this season for Wesleyan over

Shenandoah (10-11, 6-5) found itself down 44-33 at halftime as the Bishops (15-6, 8-3) shot a sizzling 18 for 30 (60.0 percent) from the field and made 7 of 10 three-pointers.

Fortunately for the Hornets, junior Tyson Thompson (Keysville, Va./Randolph-Henry) had nine points and five points in the first 20 minutes to keep SU in it.

After the hosts scored the initial point of the second half, Harris' club went on a 13-4 run from that Wesleyan free throw until the first media timeout at the 13:04 mark to get back into the game at 49-46.

The Hornets finally tied the game at 55 when Thompson hit the second of his running layups with just over eight minutes remaining. Unfortunately, after Jacob Bates (Berryville, Va./Clarke County) brought SU back to within one at 59-58, the Hornets would not score again for exactly six minutes.

Despite the long scoring drought, Harris' club was not out of it until missing a series of three point baskets in the waning moments.

Thompson led SU with 16 points while Michael Atkins (Winchester, Va./Sherando) added 15 and Bates 10. Atkins also had a game high 14 rebounds.

Box Score

The men are also in action tomorrow afternoon at Chowan College. Their contest is scheduled for a 3:00 start.
