Women's Basketball

MURFREEBORO, N.C. - Chowan College bolted to a 37-17 halftime lead on its way to a 66-35 Dixie Conference victory over visiting Shenandoah Sunday afternoon.

Chowan (13-7, 7-5) never trailed as they sent SU (4-18, 1-11) down to its fifth loss in the last six outings.

Shenandoah was hampered by cold shooting in the afternoon loss; they were just 11 for 50 (22.0 percent) on the day and 5 for 27 (18.5 percent) in the second half.

Senior Wendy Legge (Stephens City, Va./Sherando) led the Hornets with 11 points while classmate Misty Towery (Martinsville, Va./Prince Edward) pulled down a team high eight boards.

Legge is now just 17 points from 1000 for her career with at least four games left in the season. She will have three chances this week to achieve this milestone at home: Thursday against Southern Virginia, Saturday against Greensboro and Sunday on Senior Day versus Methodist. Thursday's contest will start at 6:00 while both weekend contests will tip it up at 2:00.

Men's Basketball

MURFREESBORO, N.C. - The men's basketball team salvaged a split of the weekend Dixie series Sunday afternoon with an 82-67 victory at Chowan College.

SU (11-11, 7-5) achieved its second season sweep in a one week span with the triumph over conference newcomer Chowan (5-18, 1-11). The Hornets also closed out Averett University eight days ago.

In Sunday's win, Shenandoah wasted little time in jumping on the host Braves. Coach Robert Harris' club jumped out with 20 of the first 25 points of the game before taking a 39-25 lead into the halftime lockerroom.

SU then extended its advantage to as much as 22 points before Chowan went on a 14-0 run in a span of 2:03 to cut the deficit to just eight at 68-60 with 4:31 remaining.

This would be as close as the hosts would come, as Shenandoah answered with a 10-4 run of its own to remove all doubt in the outcome of the contest.

All 10 players who saw action in the game scored at least two points. Sophomore John Tigney (Winchester, Va./James Wood) led with a career high 15 while Jacob Bates (Berryville, Va./Clarke County) added 14 and Ronald Merriwether (Frankfurt, Germany/Giessen American) 12. Junior Michael Atkins (Winchester, Va./Sherando) had another solid game with 12 points and a career high tying 16 rebounds.

Box Score

The men will return to action Wednesday night in the squad's final non-league game of the season. SU will host Villa Julie at 7:00.
