Head Coach: Rob Harris
Overall Record: 7-15 Dixie
Conference Record: 1-9
The men's basketball team
once again dropped both of its contests this past
week to fall to 7-15 overall and 1-9 in Dixie
Conference play. On Thursday, the men took an
eight point halftime lead over Methodist, but saw
the Monarchs shoot a sizzling 18 for 27 (66.7
percent) in the second half to erase the deficit
and take a 75-63 victory. Junior Ronald
Merriwether (Frankfurt, Germany/Giessen American)
had 21 points and 12 rebounds, while sophomore
Michael Atkins (Winchester, Va./Sherando) added
12 points and a game-high 13 boards. Junior Jacob
Bates (Berryville, Va./Clarke County) also was in
double figures with 10 points. The men then
completed the week with an 81-68 loss to
Greensboro College. SU shot just 7 for 30 (23
percent) in the first half as the Pride jumped
out to a 41-22 lead. The Hornets cut the deficit
to as little as seven points midway through the
second half but could get no closer as GC went on
a 23-9 run in the final moments of the contest to
snuff out any Hornet thoughts of a comeback.
Junior Chris Merriweather (Centreville, Va./Chowan)
had 11 points and Atkins 10 while Josh Benton (Bunker
Hill, W.Va./Musselman) pulled down a career high
11 rebounds in the final home game of his career.
The men complete their regular season this week
with away games at Ferrum on Friday and Averett
on Saturday. Both contests are Dixie Conference
doubleheaders with the women.
