,

– The SU men’s basketball team clinched at least fourth place in
league play Saturday afternoon with a 75-73 victory over fifth place
Greensboro College before a sellout crowd at Shingleton Gymnasium.
Shenandoah (13-11, 8-5
Dixie
)
scored 20 of the first 25 points of the contest but had to rally
from five points down in the waning moments of the contest.
Down 73-68 with
2:58
to go following a three point play by
Greensboro
’s
Marcellus Morgan, the Hornets went on a 7-0 run to finish the
contest and complete the season sweep of the Pride (11-13, 6-7).
The seven points included
three points from Michael Atkins (
Winchester
,
Va.
/Sherando),
a pair of free throws by Jacob Bates (
Berryville
,
Va.
/Clarke
County) and the deciding free throws from Tyson Thompson (
Keysville
,
Va.
/Randolph
Henry).
With the score tied at 73-73,
Shenandoah found itself in possession of the ball after the two
teams traded turnovers in the final minute. SU elected to hold the
ball for the final shot, and Thompson drew a foul with 10 ticks left
as the
Greensboro
attempted to steal. Thompson calmly sunk both attempts from the
charity stripe, giving the Hornets the win.
Greensboro
had one final attempt to tie, but Morgan’s shot glanced off the
front rim.
Senior Ronald Merriwether (
Frankfurt
,
Germany
/Giessen
American) led all scorers with 29 points while Thompson added 15 and
13 rebounds. Morgan had 22, Patrick Small 14 and
Daron Williams 13 points for the Pride.
With just one
Dixie
game left, Shenandoah now knows that it’s locked into the fourth
place position. The Hornets are two games behind the trio of
Christopher Newport, Methodist and NC Wesleyan, who are all tied for
first in the
Dixie
with 10-3 league marks. With the Ferrum loss to NC Wesleyan Saturday
afternoon, SU also knows that it will face the Pride once again next
week in the quarterfinals of the Dixie Conference Tournament.
Shenandoah and
Greensboro
will meet at
6:00
on the campus of
Methodist
College
,
this year’s tournament host.
