The baseball team, under
the direction of first year Head Coach Justin
Cronk, had its scheduled 2001 opener on Saturday
postponed due poor field conditions. No make up
date with Juniata College has been announced at
this time. The Hornets will now open the season
on the road this week with contests at Virginia
Wesleyan on Wednesday and Salisbury State on
Sunday. First pitch for both games is scheduled
for 2:00.

Mens Basketball
Head Coach: Rob Harris
Overall Record: 8-16 Dixie
Conference Record: 2-10 (6th)
The men's basketball team
completed its regular season schedule this past
week with a split of a weekend Dixie series at
Ferrum and Averett. Coach Rob Harris' squad
clinched sixth place in the Dixie Conference on
Friday with a 73-64 victory at Ferrum College,
completing the season sweep over the Panthers.
Junior Ronald Merriwether (Frankfurt, Germany/Giessen
American) led three players in double figures
with 17 points in the win, which snapped a five
game losing streak. Merriwether also recorded his
third double-double of the season with 11
rebounds. Sophomore Michael Atkins (Winchester,
Va./Sherando) also had a double-double with 12
points and 10 boards, while senior Jeff Miller (Millersville,
Md./Anne Arundel CC) chipped in with 10 points.
Atkins was also a force on the defensive end; he
had a career high seven blocks. Shenandoah was
unable to make it two in a row on Saturday,
losing 98-81 to Averett College despite Miller's
24 points. Junior Jacob Bates (Berryville, Va./Clarke
County) had 13, Merriwether 12 and Atkins 10
points and 12 rebounds in the loss. Senior Josh
Benton (Bunker Hill, W.Va./Musselman) nearly
matched Atkins' rebounding effort with 10 of his
own. This week, the men will travel to Newport
News, Va. to compete in the Dixie Conference
Tournament. SU will face No. 3 seed NC Wesleyan
at 6:00 on Thursday and then the winner of the
Averett/Ferrum game at 7:30 on Friday.

Womens Basketball

Overall Record: 9-15 Dixie
Conference Record: 3-9 (6th)
The women's basketball lost
two of three games this past week to finish the
regular season with a 9-15 overall record and a 3-9
mark in Dixie Conference play. On Tuesday, the
Hornets opened the week with a 79-60 loss to
Randolph Macon College in the team's final non-league
game of the season. Junior Roseline Fisher (Greencastle,
Pa./Hagerstown CC) had a career high 17 points
while classmate Wendy Legge (Stephens City, Va./Sherando)
added 12. The women then went on the road for
their final two regular season games, at Ferrum
on Friday and Averett on Saturday. After an 82-41
loss to Ferrum, the women bounced back on
Saturday to take the Lady Cougars 82-74 in
overtime. The win also clinched sixth place in
the league for the Hornets. Senior Carrie Weimer
(Williamsport, Md./Williamsport) turned in her
fifth double-double of the season with had a
career high 26 points and 10 rebounds while Legge
had 20 points and sophomore Adina Trammel (Leesburg,
Va./Loudoun County) 10. Trammel just missed a
triple double on the afternoon; she had a career
high 19 rebounds to go along with nine steals.
This week the women host the 20th
Annual Dixie Conference women's tournament. The
defending champion Hornets will face No. 3 seed
Ferrum at 8:00 in Thursday's quarterfinal round.
The winner of that contest will play the winner
of the Greensboro/NC Wesleyan game in Friday's 7:30
semi-final. The championship game is scheduled
for 3:00 on Saturday.

The golf team opens its
2001 spring season this Monday and Tuesday at the
NC Wesleyan/Don Scalf Invitational at the
Northgreen Country Club in Rocky Mount, North
Carolina. Shenandoah tees off at 10:00 a.m. for
both days of the 36 hole event.
