– The SU baseball team fell for the second straight time Tuesday
afternoon, losing its road opener 16-7 at Eastern
Mennonite
University
.
The Hornets (1-2) fought back
from a 7-2 deficit to tie the game at 7 with two runs in the fourth
and three more in the fifth, but saw the Royals (1-0) plate three
runs in each of their last three at-bats to take the nine run win.
Freshman Mike McVearry (Baltimore,
Md./South
River) took the loss after
giving up nine runs (all earned) on eight hits and a walk in four
innings of action. He struck out two.
SU used RBI doubles by
sophomores Dusty Crostic (Chesterfield,
Va./LC Bird), Tyler Daniel (Richmond,
Va./JR
Tucker) and junior Rodney Wooden (Baltimore, Md./Woodlawn) in the
fourth and fifth, respectively, to get back into the contest.
Crostic double to left center scored two runners while Daniel and
Wooden each drove in one.
Senior John Cowell (Devon,
Pa./Conestoga)
was 3 for 4 with a run scored and classmate Shane Lloyd (Alexandria,
Va./Hayfield)
drove in two runs with his first home run of the season. Freshman
Matt McDonald (Virginia Beach,
Va.
/Princess
Anne) also had a strong day at the plate with a pair of doubles and
a run scored in four plate appearances.
