WINCHESTER, Va. (February
27, 2001)- The baseball team achieved its first
home win of the season Tuesday afternoon,
defeating Eastern Mennonite 4-1 in non-league
action at Bridgeforth Field.
Shenandoah (2-1) scored all
the runs it would need in the bottom of the first
as the Hornets pushed across three runs on two
hits while EMU (2-2) allowed two of those runs to
be unearned with three errors in the frame.
Shenandoah jumped on top in
its first at-bat when junior John Cowell (Devon,
Pa./Conestoga) was hit by a pitch, stole second,
and then came home when he stole third and the
throw from Royals catcher Erik Kratz sailed into
leftfield. Another Kratz error led to the second
run of the game, as Jeremy Schutt (Annandale, Va./Prince
George's CC) walked and eventually scored from
third base when Kratz' attempted pickoff throw to
first base against Mike Gallagher (Springfield,
Va./Hayfield) got past EMU first baseman Matt
Gale and squirted into rightfield.
Tommy Delaney (Fairfax
Station, Va./Hayfield) completed the scoring in
the inning when he drove in Jake Fiedler (Fairfax,
Va./Chantilly) with a single to right. Fiedler
reached base with a single to left, advanced to
second on a error by second baseman Matt Thompson
and then to third on Kratz' second throwing error.
Freshman righthander J.R.
Creamer (Lovettsville, Va./Loudoun Valley) earned
his first college win with five innings of work.
He struck out three and gave up two hits and an
unearned run in his first ever college start.
Junior Chris Kees (Gore, Va./James Wood) picked
up his first save of the season with two innings
of scoreless relief. He struck out four and gave
up just one hit.
