FORT MYERS, Fla. (March 2,
2001) - The SU baseball team got itself back on
the winning track Friday night, pasting Gwynedd
Mercy (Pa.) 14-3 in the Hornets opening game of
the Gene Cusic Classic.
Shenandoah (3-2) scored
four runs in the first and two more in both the
second and fourth innings to take the commanding
lead.
Senior Tony Canterna (Linthicum,
Md./Anne Arundel CC) tied a school record with
five hits in five at-bats against the Griffins.
Canterna's career day included two doubles, a
home run and a pair of runs batted in. Junior
John Cowell (Devon, Pa./Conestoga) was 3 for 4
while classmate Tommy Delaney (Fairfax Station,
Va./Hayfield) was 2 for 4 with 3 RBI.
Sophomore Jake Fiedler (Fairfax,
Va./Chantilly) evened his record at 1-1 on the
year by not allowing a run in five innings on the
mound. Fiedler also struck out six against two
walks and three hits.
Shenandoah continues play
in the tournament on Saturday with Rose Hulman (Ind.)
and Wabash (Ind.) at 11:00 am and 6:00 pm,
respectively.
Shenandoah
