FORT MYERS, Fla. (March 3, 2001) - The baseball team split its two games at the Gene Cusic Tournament on Saturday, defeating Rose Hulman (Ind.) 15-10 before dropping a 7-6 heartbreaker to Wabash (Ind.) in nine innings.

In the first game SU jumped on the Engineers (7-5) for five runs in the first and three more in both the second and third innings to take a lead they would never relinquish.

The Hornets banged out 14 hits in the win; sophomore Mike Gallagher (Springfield, Va./Hayfield) had the big blow with a three-run home run in the top of the first inning. John Cowell (Devon, Pa./Conestoga), Jake Fiedler (Fairfax, Va./Chantilly), Jeremy Schutt (Annandale, Va./Prince George's CC), Adam Beckerink (Lakewood, N.Y./Jamestown CC), Tom Delaney (Fairfax Station, Va./Hayfield and Casey Miller (Portsmouth, Va./Churchland) all had two hits for Shenandoah. Cowell and Fielder chipped in with a pair of RBI while Tony Canterna (Linthicum, Md./Anne Arundel) was 1 for 4 with 3 RBI.

Freshman JR Creamer (Lovettsville, Va./Loudoun Valley) improved to 2-0 on the season by striking out three in 4.1 innings of action. Creamer gave up 10 hits and nine runs, all of which were earned.

In the nightcap, the Hornets held a 6-5 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh before Wabash (1-0) tied the game in their final at-bat on a leadoff double and then a sacrifice fly off of relief pitcher Chris Kees (Gore, Va./James Wood). Kees fell to 1-2 on the season when he was touched for a two-out solo home run in the bottom of the ninth by shortstop Matt Carlson.

Cowell was 3 for 5 with 2 RBI and Fiedler 2 for 5 to lead SU on offense.

Shenandoah is now 4-3 overall on the season.
