FORT MYERS, Fla. (March 5,
2001) - The SU baseball team scored 12 runs in
both games of a doubleheader with Clarke (Iowa)
College Monday afternoon, sweeping the Crusaders
12-9 and 12-8 at the Gene Cusic Classic.
In game one, SU took a 8-1
lead heading into the bottom of the fifth inning
only to see Clarke tie the contest with five runs
in the bottom of the sixth.
The Crusaders five run
frame chased Hornets starter Jeremy Schutt (Annandale,
Va./Prince George's CC) with two outs. Sophomore
Jake Fiedler (Fairfax, Va./Chantilly) allowed two
more runs before getting out of the inning with
the score tied at 8-8.
Junior John Cowell (Devon,
Pa./Conestoga) then won the contest for
Shenandoah in the top of the seventh when he
tripled home Chris Zaia (Macungie, Pa./Emmaus)
and Tommy Delaney (Fairfax Station, Va./Hayfield),
who had reached base on a walk and single,
respectively.
After Fiedler allowed the
first four runners in the bottom of the seventh
to reach base, sophomore Seth Foster (Alexandria,
Va./Hayfield) earned his first save of the season
by inducing a game ending double play.
Cowell continued his torrid
hitting with a 4 for 4 performance that including
a pair of runs scored and the two seventh-inning
RBI. Delaney was 2 for 4 with a home run, Fiedler
2 for 5 with 2 RBI while Schutt hit his second
home run of the season.
Fiedler got the win on the
mound to even his record at 1-1 on the year.
The nightcap brought more
of the same as the Hornets jumped out to a 7-0
lead after two innings on the way to the 12-8
victory. Shenandoah banged out 16 hits in the
seven inning contest; senior Tony Canterna (Linthicum,
Md./Anne Arundel CC) was 3 for 5 with an RBI
after going 1 for 4 with 3 RBI in game one.
Fielder, Delaney, Zaia,
Copp and Mike Gallagher (Springfield, Va./Hayfield)
all had two hits in the victory with Zaia and
Copp driving in three runs apiece. Copp's 3 RBI
came on a three-run home run. His blast was one
of three that SU hit in game two; Schutt and
Fielder each hit solo shots.
Junior Chris Kees (Gore, Va./James
Wood) moved to 2-2 with his second complete game
victory of the spring. He struck out seven and
walked four while giving up 11 hits and the eight
runs. Six of the runs were earned.
The two wins improve SU to
6-3 while Clarke is now 0-2.
