– The Shenandoah University baseball team snapped its six game
losing streak Tuesday morning with a 7-1 win over Malone at the Gene
Cusic Tournament.
Freshman Mike McVearry (Bowie
,
Md./South
River
)
improved to 2-1 on the season with the complete game victory, his
second of the season. McVearry scattered five hits and three walks
against three strikeouts in the seven innings; he gave up Malone’s
only run of the game in the bottom of the first inning.
With the score tied at 1-1 heading into
the second, Shenandoah (3-9) seized control of the contest with four
runs on five hits in the top of the frame. Sophomore
Rusty Crostic (Chesterfield,
Va./LC
Bird) had the big blow with a two-run double that scored Rodney
Wooden (Baltimore,
Md./Woodlawn)
and Brent Meixell (Saylorsville,
Pa./Pleasant
Valley).
Shenandoah added its final two runs of the
game in the top of the seventh on RBI singles from Wooden and Matt
MacDonald (Virginia
Beach,
Va./Princess Anne). Wooden drove in Gabe Abreu (Reinholds,
Pa./Garden
Spot), who led off the inning with a triple.
Wooden finished 3 for 4 with three runs
scored and two RBI while MacDonald continued his torrid hitting with
three hits in four at-bats.

The Hornets are off on Wednesday and
return to action with a doubleheader on Thursday morning against
Olivet (Mich.).
