WINCHESTER
,
Va.
– The SU women’s softball team opened its 2002 season Wednesday
afternoon with 9-0 and 9-1 losses to Division II Shepherd College.
Both games ended early due to the NCAA mercy rule.
Defensive miscues plagued the
Hornets (0-2) in game one as they made seven errors that led to six
unearned runs for Shepherd (2-1). Senior pitcher Amanda Long (Antwerp,
Oh./IPFW) scattered seven hits and a walk in the five inning
contest.
Sophomore Katey Wilson (Amissville,
Va./Rapphannock)
prevented the Hornets from being no-hit with her fifth inning
single.
SU had just two hits in game two;
Long and Erin May (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) had singles in
the fifth and sixth, respectively.
Coach Ellie Tanner’s club scored
its only run off the afternoon in the fifth inning of game two when
SU took advantage of a Shepherd error to start the frame. Jodi
Milburn (Winchester,
Va./Lord
Fairfax CC) reached on an error by the centerfielder, moved the
third on Long’s single and then scored on a groundball to short by
Lesley Beard (Youngstown, Ohio/Austintown
Fitch).
