Baseball

FORT MYERS , Fla. – The SU baseball team wrapped up its eight day stay in Florida Saturday morning with a 5-3 victory over Mount Union (O.) College. The win comes on the heels of a 10-1 victory over Westfield (Mass.) State on Friday evening.

Shenandoah (5-10) won three of its final five games at the Gene Cusic Tournament and finished 3-5 overall at the tourney.

In Saturday’s finale, freshman Mike McVearry (Bowie, Md./South River) improved to 3-1 on the season with his second straight complete game victory. He gave up three runs (one earned) on eight hits and two walks in the seven innings. McVearry also struck out four.

After falling behind 2-0 as Mount Union scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the first, SU took the lead for good with three runs of its own one inning later. Freshman Matt MacDonald (Virginia Beach, Va./Princess Anne) led off with a single and moved to second when Shane Lloyd (Alexandria, Va./Hayfield) was hit by a pitch. MacDonald then scored on sophomore Tyler Daniel’s (Richmond, Va./JR Tucker) single.

Freshman Brent Meixsell (Saylorsville, Pa./Pleasant Valley) tied the score one batter later as he drove home Lloyd with a sacrifice fly to center. Rodney Wooden (Baltimore, Md./Woodlawn) completed the rally with an RBI double that plated Daniel.

Daniel finished with two of the Hornets eight hits; he was 2 for 3 with two RBI and two runs scored.

Shenandoah scored a season high 10 runs on 12 hits in Friday’s 10-1 victory over Westfield State. As with Saturday’s game, the Hornets rallied from a first inning deficit to score three runs in the third and take the victory.

MacDonald and Lloyd once again figured in the rally; each drove in a run with a single. Lloyd finished the day 3 for 5 with two RBI while Wooden, MacDonald and Dusty Crostic (Chesterfield, Va./LC Bird) all had two hits each. MacDonald and Crostic also drove in a pair of runs each.

Sophomore JR Creamer (Lovettsville, Va./Loudoun Valley) earned his first victory of the spring by scattering five hits and the lone run in 8 1/3 innings. Freshman Tyler Gorman (Alexandria, Va./Hayfield) completed the contest for Creamer by inducing a groundball double play against the only batter he faced.
