Baseball

Head Coach: Justin Cronk

Overall Record: 7-6 Dixie Conference Record: 0-2

The baseball team split its six games this past week to move to 7-6 overall on the season. Head Coach Justin Cronk's club opened the week in positive fashion; they swept a Monday doubleheader 12-9 and 12-8 from Clarke (Iowa) College. In game one, SU took an 8-1 lead heading into the bottom of the fifth inning only to see Clarke tie the contest with five runs in the bottom of the sixth. The Crusaders five run frame chased Hornets starter Jeremy Schutt (Annandale, Va./Prince George's CC) with two outs. Sophomore Jake Fiedler (Fairfax, Va./Chantilly) allowed two more runs before getting out of the inning with the score tied at 8-8. Junior John Cowell (Devon, Pa./Conestoga) then won the contest for Shenandoah in the top of the seventh when he tripled home Chris Zaia (Macungie, Pa./Emmaus) and Tommy Delaney (Fairfax Station, Va./Hayfield), who had reached base on a walk and single, respectively. After Fiedler allowed the first four runners in the bottom of the seventh to reach base, sophomore Seth Foster (Alexandria, Va./Hayfield) earned his first save of the season by inducing a game ending double play. Cowell continued his torrid hitting with a 4 for 4 performance that including a pair of runs scored and the two seventh-inning RBI. Delaney was 2 for 4 with a home run, Fiedler 2 for 5 with 2 RBI while Schutt hit his second home run of the season. Fiedler got the win on the mound to even his record at 1-1 on the year. The nightcap brought more of the same as the Hornets jumped out to a 7-0 lead after two innings on the way to the 12-8 victory. Shenandoah banged out 16 hits in the seven inning contest; senior Tony Canterna (Linthicum, Md./Anne Arundel CC) was 3 for 5 with an RBI after going 1 for 4 with 3 RBI in game one. Fielder, Delaney, Zaia, Josh Copp (Winchester, Va./James Wood) and Mike Gallagher (Springfield, Va./Hayfield) all had two hits in the victory with Zaia and Copp driving in three runs apiece. Copp's 3 RBI came on a three-run home run. His blast was one of three that SU hit in game two; Schutt and Fielder each hit solo shots. Junior Chris Kees (Gore, Va./James Wood) moved to 2-2 with his second complete game victory of the spring. He struck out seven and walked four while giving up 11 hits and the eight runs. On Tuesday, SU completed a five game Florida swing with a 14-1 blowout victory over Pitt-Bradford. The win gives Shenandoah four wins in five games at the Tournament, their best performance in four trips to the Classic. The Hornets were 6-4 in 1998, 3-5 in '99 and 6-3 last season at the annual tourney. Copp earned his first collegiate win on the mound by combining with senior Adam Beckerink (Lakewood, N.Y./Jamestown CC) to gain their team's third straight victory. Copp's five inning performance included three strikeouts against three walks, two hits and a run. Beckerink then pitched four scoreless innings to pick up his first save. Shenandoah scored the 14 runs on just nine hits; Schutt led the way with three hits in four at-bats and also drove in two runs. Zaia was the only other SU player with more than one hit. He was 2 for 3 with 3 RBI on two doubles. The Hornets then concluded their spring break trip with a 12-3 loss to Division II Valdosta (Ga.) State. Shenandoah committed seven errors in the contest that led to six unearned runs for the host Blazers. Two of those miscues occurred in the first inning when Valdosta scored eight runs on five hits. The Hornets three runs all came in the third when Zaia led off with a single to left, moved to second on a Shane Lloyd (Alexandria, Va./Hayfield) walk and then scored on Fiedler's single to left. After Fiedler moved to second on a passed ball, Beckerink drove in Lloyd on a sacrifice fly. Fiedler then scored what proved to be the visitors last run of the game when Canterna doubled down the rightfield line. Foster fell to 0-1 on the year after giving up all 12 runs (six earned) on eight hits and three walks in seven innings. He also struck out four. SU returned home to complete the week's play with a pair of Dixie Conference contests with Christopher Newport. Unfortunately, Cronk's club was unable to hold leads on either day and dropped 5-2 and 10-7 decisions. Shenandoah led CNU 2-0 heading into the top of the eighth inning on Saturday and scored the opening run of the game on Sunday before the Captains erupted for seven runs in the top of the third to take a commanding lead. Kees took the loss on Saturday; his record is now 2-3. Kees gave up nine hits, five runs (three earned) and walked four against eight strikeouts. Gallagher and Kees both had two hits each for the Hornets while Cowell and Zaia each drove in a run. On Sunday, the Captains completed the weekend sweep with the 10-7 victory. SU found itself down 10-1 after giving up seven runs in the third and three more in the fourth, but battled back to score six runs in the final three innings to claw back into the contest. Cowell was 3 for 3 with a run scored, Schutt 2 for 3 with 2 RBI, Gallagher 2 for 5 with an RBI and Beckerink 2 for 4 with an RBI. Foster took the loss on the mound; he went 2.1 innings giving up eight hits, seven runs (all earned) and no walks against one strikeout. Overall Record: 0-7 Dixie Conference Record: 0-0

The softball team opened play this past week with seven losses in seven games. On Thursday, SU lost the first game under new Head Coach Ellie Tanner 6-5 to Salem College in 10 innings. Senior pitcher Amanda Long (Antwerp, Ohio/Indiana Univ. - Fort Wayne) paced Shenandoah with a 4 for 5 performance that included 2 RBI. Freshman Lesley Beard (Youngstown, Ohio/Austintown Fitch) was the only other player with more than one hit on the day. She was 2 for 5 and scored two runs. After trailing most of the contest, SU tied the game in the top of the seventh inning when Kim Denhup (Annandale, Va./Bishop Ireton) led off the frame with a single and moved to second on an error by Salem second baseman Kim Young. Beard reached on the error and then both players came around to score when Young committed her second error of the inning, this time on a bunt by sophomore Jennifer Jones (Radiant, Va./Madison County). The Hornets placed runners in scoring position in both the eighth and ninth innings, but could not push across the go ahead run. The game is the longest that SU has played in eight years; Thursday's nine inning game surpasses the 11-10, eight inning loss to Wilson College on April 19, 1999. Tanner's squad then played four games at the Meredith College Tournament on Friday and Saturday, losing 13-1 to Peace, 12-2 to Meredith and 11-1 and 14-6 to Randolph Macon Woman's College.
