Baseball Takes a Pair

WINCHESTER, Va. – The SU baseball team ran its win streak to four Tuesday evening with a doubleheader sweep over Christendom College. Shenandoah (7-10) won game one 17-3 before taking game two 11-0 in five innings. Game two was shortened because of rain.

The Hornets scored 11 runs in the nightcap on just three hits; junior Chris Zaia (Macungie, Pa./Emmaus) and freshman Matt MacDonald (Virginia Beach, Va./Princess Anne) were both 1 for 2 with a pair of RBIs in the victory.

Sophomore Tyler Gorman (Alexandria, Va./Hayfield) earned his first victory on the mound by pitching a scoreless first four innings of the game. He struck out four, gave up three hits and a walk as he helped SU to its first shutout of the year.

Coach Justin Cronk’s squad took game one by scoring seven runs in the fifth and six more in the sixth inning to break open a 4-3 contest.

Sophomore Tyler Daniel (Richmond, Va./JR Tucker) finished 2 for 5 with three RBI while MacDonald and John Cowell (Devon, Pa./Conestoga) both drove in two runs.

Freshman Richard Hodge (Pearisburg, Va./Narrows) earned his first win of the spring by striking out two against eight hits and two walks in six innings. He also gave up all three runs (two earned).

Shenandoah is back in action again on Thursday with a non-league game against Mary Washington College. Game time is 4:00.

 


Golf

SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKE, Va. – The Shenandoah University golf team shot 340 in day two of the Ferrum College Tournament to finish 13th with a two-day total 340-344—684. SU finished eight strokes behind 12th place Ferrum, who moved ahead of the Hornets with a 330 on the second day of the tournament.

Sophomore Kevin Richards (Denville, N.J./Morris Knolls) led SU over the par 71, 6724 yard Waterfront Golf Course with a 10-over-par 81. Classmate Byron Pitts (Nokesille, Va./Homeschool) ended up as the top Shenandoah finisher with a two-day total 81-84-165. He finished tied for 41st.

Shenandoah is now off until next Tuesday when they travel to Virginia Wesleyan for a quad match at Kiskiak GC.
