WINCHESTER, Va. (March 13,
2001) - The SU baseball team got itself back on
the winning track Tuesday evening with a
doubleheader sweep of Division II Columbia Union
College. After snapping a three-game losing
streak with a 14-9 win in game one, the Hornets (9-6)
completed the sweep with a 23-9 game two drubbing.
Freshman Tyler Daniel (Richmond,
Va./J.R. Tucker) made the most his first
significant playing time by setting a new school
record in the nightcap with 8 RBI. Daniel was 4
for 4 with three runs scored on a double and two
home runs in just his second start of the season.
His eight runs batted in breaks the previous
record of six, held jointly by Geoff Williams '00
and Jeremy Schutt (Annandale, Va./Prince George's
CC). Junior Tom Delaney (Fairfax Station, Va./Hayfield)
was 4 for 5 with 3 RBI while Jake Fielder (Fairfax,
Va./Chantilly) followed up his game one win on
the mound with a 3 for 5 performance at the plate
in game two.
Freshman Josh Copp (Winchester,
Va./James Wood) earned the nightcap victory by
allowing four hits in 1.2 innings of action.
Junior Chris Kees (Gore, Va./James Wood) picked
up his second save of the season by pitching a
scoreless final 2.1 innings.
Fiedler went the distance
in the lidlifter; he struck out seven and walked
just one in the win. He gave up seven hits and
five runs (one earned) to improve his pitching
record to 2-1. Fiedler also led the Hornets at
the plate with three hits in four at-bats and two
runs batted in. Sophomore Chris Zaia (Macungie,
Pa./Emmaus) was the only other player with more
than one hit. He was 2 for 3 and had an RBI.
