Baseball

WINCHESTER , Va. – Mary Washington College ended Shenandoah University’s four-game baseball winning streak Thursday with a 9-6 non-league win.

SU (7-11) had won four straight dating back to its spring break trip to Florida before Mary Washington (12-3) earned its second straight win over the Hornets.

After Shenandoah tied the game at 3-3 with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third on three hits, the Eagles went back in front for what proved to be the final time of the game by scoring two runs of their own in the top of the fourth.

MWC iced the game by sandwiching single runs in the fifth and eighth around two runs in the seventh. SU matched Mary Washington with two seventh inning tallies but saw its ninth inning rally come up short after scoring one run in the bottom of the ninth.

Senior John Cowell (Devon, Pa./Conestoga) led the Hornets at the plate with a 3 for 5 afternoon that included an RBI and a run scored.  Freshman Matt MacDonald (Virginia Beach, Va./Princess Anne) celebrated his selection as Dixie Conference Rookie Hitter of the Week with two hits in five at-bats.

Senior Jafar Alexander (San Jose, Calif./Wilcox) scored Shenandoah final run of the game as he connected for his first home run of the season.

The Dixie Conference Rookie Pitcher of the Week, freshman Mike McVearry (Bowie, Md./South River), did not fare as well as MacDonald. McVearry fell to 3-2 on the season after giving up six runs on six hits and a walk in six innings of work. McVearry was victimized by eight Shenandoah errors; two of the Eagles nine runs were unearned.

Mark McEathron drove in three runs for MWC while Mike Drummond and Aaron Altscher both had a pair of hits.
