Baseball

WINCHESTER , Va.   Shenandoah University outhit Dixie rival Ferrum College by three hits Saturday afternoon, but the Panthers got the only one that mattered in a 1-0 victory.

Ferrum (9-3, 1-0) scored the only run of the game with two outs in the seventh inning when No. 5 hitter Ricky Peace lofted a 3-2 curveball just over the leftfield wall to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.

Senior Doug Heagen made that one run stand up as he improved to 4-0 on the season by scattering five hits in the complete game victory. Heagen struck out 15 batters and did not issue a walk.

Shenandoah (7-12, 0-1) saw its best chance to score come in the first inning. The Hornets had runners on second and third with one out after senior John Cowell (Devon, Pa./Conestoga) moved Dusty Crostic (Chesterfield, Va./LC Bird) and Rodney Wooden (Baltimore, Md./Woodlawn) to second and third, respectively, with a groundout to second. Wooden led off the SU first with a single to center and then moved to second on Crostic’s infield single.

Unfortunately, Ferrum escaped trouble as Wooden was cut down at home on a fielder’s choice and then rightfielder Jafar Alexander (San Jose, Calif./Wilcox) lined out to short.

The Hornets lack of offensive firepower ruined an excellent pitching performance by junior Seth Foster (Alexandria, Va./Hayfield). Foster (1-3) gave up just a first inning single and the home run in the complete game performance. He struck out seven while hitting a batter and walking another.

Crostic had two of the Hornets five hits. He finished 2 for 4.

Box Score

These two teams are right back in action Sunday afternoon with a 1:00 start.
