The baseball team won four of five games this past week to improve to 10-7 overall and 1-3 in Dixie Conference play. SU opened play with a Tuesday doubleheader sweep of Division II Columbia Union College. After snapping a three-game losing streak with a 14-9 win in game one, the Hornets completed the sweep with a 23-9 game two drubbing. Freshman Tyler Daniel (Richmond, Va./J.R. Tucker) made the most his first significant playing time by setting a new school record in the nightcap with 8 RBI. Daniel was 4 for 4 with three runs scored on a double and two home runs in just his second start of the season. His eight runs batted in breaks the previous record of six, held jointly by Geoff Williams '00 and Jeremy Schutt (Annandale, Va./Prince George's CC). Junior Tom Delaney (Fairfax Station, Va./Hayfield) was 4 for 5 with 3 RBI while Jake Fielder (Fairfax, Va./Chantilly) followed up his game one win on the mound with a 3 for 5 performance at the plate in game two. Junior Chris Kees (Gore, Va./James Wood) picked up his second save of the season by pitching a scoreless final 2.1 innings. Fiedler went the distance in the lidlifter; he struck out seven and walked just one in the win. He gave up seven hits and five runs (one earned) to improve his pitching record to 2-1. Fiedler also led the Hornets at the plate with three hits in four at-bats and two RBI. Sophomore Chris Zaia (Macungie, Pa./Emmaus) was the only other player with more than one hit. He was 2 for 3 and had a run batted in. The Hornets got their final win of the week on Saturday with a 14-4 victory over Greensboro College. Daniel once again led the hit parade; he hit his first career grand slam home run to key a six run third inning. Kees evened his record at 3-3 on the season with his third complete game victory of the spring. Kees struck out five and gave up four runs (all earned) on seven hits while walking one. He also hit a batter. Shenandoah banged out 18 hits in the victory. In addition to Daniel's HR, senior Tony Canterna (Linthicum, Md./Anne Arundel CC) hit his third home run of the season.
