Head Coach: Justin Cronk
Overall Record: 10-7 Dixie
Conference Record: 1-3
The baseball team won four
of five games this past week to improve to 10-7
overall and 1-3 in Dixie Conference play. SU
opened play with a Tuesday doubleheader sweep of
Division II Columbia Union College. After
snapping a three-game losing streak with a 14-9
win in game one, the Hornets completed the sweep
with a 23-9 game two drubbing. Freshman Tyler
Daniel (Richmond, Va./J.R. Tucker) made the most
his first significant playing time by setting a
new school record in the nightcap with 8 RBI.
Daniel was 4 for 4 with three runs scored on a
double and two home runs in just his second start
of the season. His eight runs batted in breaks
the previous record of six, held jointly by Geoff
Williams '00 and Jeremy Schutt (Annandale, Va./Prince
George's CC). Junior Tom Delaney (Fairfax Station,
Va./Hayfield) was 4 for 5 with 3 RBI while Jake
Fielder (Fairfax, Va./Chantilly) followed up his
game one win on the mound with a 3 for 5
performance at the plate in game two. Freshman
Josh Copp (Winchester, Va./James Wood) earned the
nightcap victory by allowing four hits in 1.2
innings of action. Junior Chris Kees (Gore, Va./James
Wood) picked up his second save of the season by
pitching a scoreless final 2.1 innings. Fiedler
went the distance in the lidlifter; he struck out
seven and walked just one in the win. He gave up
seven hits and five runs (one earned) to improve
his pitching record to 2-1. Fiedler also led the
Hornets at the plate with three hits in four at-bats
and two RBI. Sophomore Chris Zaia (Macungie, Pa./Emmaus)
was the only other player with more than one hit.
He was 2 for 3 and had a run batted in. The
Hornets got their final win of the week on
Saturday with a 14-4 victory over Greensboro
College. Daniel once again led the hit parade; he
hit his first career grand slam home run to key a
six run third inning. Kees evened his record at 3-3
on the season with his third complete game
victory of the spring. Kees struck out five and
gave up four runs (all earned) on seven hits
while walking one. He also hit a batter.
Shenandoah banged out 18 hits in the victory. In
addition to Daniel's HR, senior Tony Canterna (Linthicum,
Md./Anne Arundel CC) hit his third home run of
the season. SU then finished the week on Sunday
with a 4-3 loss to Greensboro in 10 innings. The
Hornets held were just one out away from
completing the weekend sweep of the Pride when GC
put together a two-out rally to escape with the
one run victory. Schutt was 2 for 4 with two RBI
and Canterna contributed two hits in five at-bats.
Fiedler took the loss; he gave up the four runs (two
earned) on 10 hits in 9.2 innings. He struck out
eight against just one walk. This week SU has
four games. Head Coach Justin Cronk's club will
host Oswego (NY) State on Monday and Thursday
before taking on Ferrum College in Ferrum over
the weekend in a Dixie Conference series.

Men's Lacrosse
Head Coach: Brian Jenkins
Overall Record: 1-2
The men's lacrosse team
split its two games this past week to move to 1-2
overall on the season. On Wednesday, SU evened
its record at 1-1 on the year with an 18-8
victory over Susquehanna. The Hornets jumped out
to a 7-0 lead at the end of the first to cruise
to the easy win over the Crusaders. Sophomore
Chris Keller (Smithsburg, Md./Smithsburg) and
junior Matt Burton (Woodbridge, Va./Woodbridge)
scored nine and seven points, respectively, to
lead the Hornets. Keller had three goals and six
assists while Burton led all scorers with six
goals on the afternoon. Freshman Matt Linton (Gaithersburg,
Md./Quince Orchard) also helped the cause with
his first career hat trick. Unfortunately, the
men were unable to extend their winning streak on
Saturday as they dropped an 18-11 decision to
Neumann College. The Knights scored five of the
first seven goals of the game and eventually
extended their lead to 10-5 by halftime. After SU
scored the first two goals of the third quarter
to cut the deficit to just three at 10-7, Neumann
answered with six straight goals to take a
commanding 16-7 lead after three. Matt Burton led
SU with four goals and two assists for six points.
Senior Joe Krewson (Cambridge, Md./Cambridge) and
Keller both had four points. Keller had two goals
and two assists while Krewson added a goal and
three assists. The men have two more home games
this week. They will host Centenary on Wednesday
and Scranton on Saturday. Face-offs are scheduled
for 3:30 and 1:00, respectively.

Women's Tennis
Head Coach: Ernest Barkman
Overall Record: 0-2 Dixie
Conference Record: 0-0
The women's tennis team
also opened its 2001 spring season this past week.
SU lost 7-2 to Eastern Mennonite on Monday and 8-1
to Catholic on Wednesday. Sophomore Wendy Legge (Stephens
City, Va./Sherando) got two wins in her first two
matches on Monday with a 6-4, retired victory at
No. 5 singles and an 8-5 win with Kristen Bradd (Front
Royal, Va./James Madison) at No. 2 doubles. The
women completed the week with an 8-1 loss to
Catholic on Wednesday. Juniors Jennifer McNeal (Verona,
Va./Fort Defiance) and Roseline Fisher (Greencastle,
Pa./Hagerstown CC) were the only SU players to
extend their respective matches to three sets.
Fisher lost 6-4, 3-6, 3-6 at No. 5 singles while
McNeal and Catholic's Mo Hegedus decided their
marathon No. 1 singles match with a tie-breaker.
After the two players each took a set by a 7-6
score, it was decided to end the match with a tie-breaker
rather than play a full third set. Hegedus won
the tie break 7-3. The Hornets got its only win
courtesy of a forfeit in No. 1 doubles as Hegedus
was unable to play due to exhaustion from the 2 1/2
hour singles match. This week the women host
Randolph Macon on Wednesday before playing three
Dixie Conference matches in three days. SU will
host Greensboro on Friday and then travel to
Ferrum on Saturday and Averett on Sunday.
