WINCHESTER, Va. (March 19,
2001) - The SU baseball team extended its non-league
winning streak to three on Monday with a 3-1
victory over Oswego (NY) State. Shenandoah (11-7)
scored all three of its runs in the sixth inning;
the Hornets strung together four hits and an
intentional walk to produce the three runs.
Junior John Cowell (Devon,
Pa./Conestoga) led off the frame with a double.
He came home one batter later as designated
hitter Jake Fiedler (Fairfax, Va./Chantilly) hit
a double of his own. After a Tony Canterna (Linthicum,
Md./Anne Arundel CC) groundout and an intentional
walk to third baseman Jeremy Schutt (Annandale,
Va./Prince George's CC), SU took the lead for
good when Mike Gallagher (Springfield, Va./Hayfield)
singled home Fiedler. Coach Justin Cronk's club
added an insurance run one out later on an RBI
single by Tommy Delaney (Fairfax Station, Va./Hayfield).
Sophomore Seth Foster (Alexandria,
Va./Hayfield) earned his first victory of the
season by scattering five hits and one earned run
over 7.2 innings. He improved his record to 1-2
with six strikeouts against only one walk. Schutt
came on to get the final four outs of the contest
to pick up his first save of the season. He gave
up just one hit and struck out the side in the
ninth.
The Lakers (0-1) scored
their only run in the second inning when Chuck
Zambito singled home Rob Burke from second base
with two outs. Burke reached on a fielder's
choice and then stole second.
