Baseball Defeats NC Wesleyan

Baseball

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. –  The SU baseball team evened its Dixie Conference record at 1-1 Saturday afternoon with a 6-2 victory over NC Wesleyan.

Shenandoah (8-13, 1-1) has now won three straight Dixie Conference games against the Bishops (7-10, 0-3).

Senior Jafar Alexander (San Jose, Calif./Wilcox) led the Hornets in the win with a 2 for 4 performance at the plate that included a three-run home run.  Juniors Rodney Wooden (Baltimore, Md./Woodlawn) and Chris Zaia (Macungie, Pa./Emmaus) were both 2 for 4 while freshman Matt MacDonald (Virginia Beach, Va./Princess Anne) had two hits in five at-bats.

Junior Seth Foster (Alexandria, Va./Hayfield) earned the win on the mound with his second complete game in as many Dixie outings. His is now 2-3 on the year.

A complete box score and play by play will be available tomorrow following the Hornets return to Winchester.

These two teams complete their weekend series Sunday afternoon with a 2:00 contest.


Men’s Lacrosse

ASTON, Pa. – The SU men’s lacrosse team fell to 1-4 on the season today with a 20-13 loss to Neumann College in the Hornets inaugural Pennsylvania Athletic Conference contest. After nine seasons of playing as an independent, Shenandoah (1-4, 0-1) joined the PAC as an associate member prior to this season.

Unfortunately, the Knights ruined Shenandoah’s historic day by opening up a 4-2 lead in the first 15 minutes and expanded that lead to 9-4 by halftime. Neumann (2-2, 1-0) then iced the game by outscoring SU 11-9 in the final 30 minutes of play.

Brett Hayden keyed Neumann’s victory with nine points on six goals and three assists while Ryan Erdman had six goals and one assist and Frank Ruffo five goals and two assists.

Sophomore Elmer Baker (Fort Montgomery, N.Y./O’Neill) led SU with four goals and three assists for seven points with Chris Keller (Smithsburg, Md./Smithsburg) adding four assists. Senior Matt Burton (Ashburn, Va./Woodbridge) matched Keller’s output with three goals and one assist.

The Hornets continue PAC play next week with a road game at Wesley College on Wednesday afternoon.

 


Women’s Lacrosse

WINCHESTER , Va. – Greensboro College continued its march to a second straight Dixie Conference women’s lacrosse title Saturday evening with a 23-1 victory over homestanding Shenandoah.

Greensboro (7-2, 2-0) jumped out to a 13-0 halftime lead and led 19-0 before junior Christine LaTouche (Elkton, Va./Spotswood) got SU on the board with just over seven minutes to play.

Rebecca Beddinghove had six goals, Laura Henry five goals and three assists and Lorin Smith four goals and four assists for the Lady Pride. GC outshot Shenandoah 45-8.

Sophomore goalkeeper Bridget Robbins (Baker, W. Va./East Hardy) had 10 saves for SU (0-3, 0-1).

Shenandoah will take to the road for the first time this season on Wednesday afternoon with a non-league game at Sweet Briar College. Game time is 4:00 .


Women’s Tennis

 

WINCHESTER, Va. – The women’s tennis team continued its strong play this spring with a 6-3 victory over Ferrum College Saturday afternoon.

SU (4-2, 2-0) surpassed last season’s win total with the victory, its fourth in the last five matches.

The Hornets kept themselves undefeated in league play by winning four of six singles matches and two of three in doubles. Senior Jen McNeal (Verona, Va./Fort Defiance) returned to action after missing Thursday’s non-league match by sweeping both of her matches. McNeal was a 7-5, 6-3 winner over Becky Soteres at No. 1 singles and teamed with Wendy Legge (Stephens City, Va./Sherando) to win 8-6 at the top doubles spot.

Junior Jessica Padgett (Cincinnati, Ohio/Ross) also was a double winner for SU. She backed up her 6-2, 6-1 No. 6 singles victory with a 9-8 (7-3) triumph at No. 2 doubles.

WINCHESTER , Va. – The men’s tennis team was not as successful as the women; SU remains winless on the season after Ferrum took home a 6-1 win.

Senior Jason Aud (Mount Airy, Md./Frederick CC) was the only winner for SU (0-3, 0-2). He defeated Jeff Stowe 6-2, 6-2 at No. 4 singles.

The Hornets are back in action again Sunday afternoon against Methodist College. The doubleheader with the women starts at 11:00 .
