Baseball Falls to NC Wesleyan

Baseball

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. –  Coach Justin Cronk and his baseball team could not complete the series sweep of NC Wesleyan Sunday afternoon; the Bishops salvaged a split with an 11-4 win.

Shenandoah (8-14, 1-2) was never in it as Wesleyan (8-12, 1-3) scored single runs in the first, third and fourth and eventually led 9-0 before the Hornets got on the board.

SU scored all four of its runs in the final three innings as they combined five hits and three Bishops errors to inch back into the contest.

Senior Jafar Alexander (San Jose, Calif./Wilcox) got Shenandoah started in the seventh with an RBI double while classmate Tommy Delaney (Fairfax Station, Va./Hayfield) drove in a pair of runs in the eighth on a double. Sophomore Dusty Crostic (Chesterfield, Va./LC Bird) completed the visitors scoring when he plated Tyler Daniel (Richmond, Va./JR Tucker) with a single up the middle.

Sophomore JR Creamer (Lovettsville, Va./Loudoun Valley) took the loss after giving up seven runs on 13 hits and two walks in 5.1 innings. He struck out three.

SU will face Ferrum College Monday afternoon in a makeup of a rained out game from March 17.

 


Softball

 

WINCHESTER , Va. – The softball team remains winless on the season after Greensboro took 12-3 and 14-4 victories Sunday afternoon.

Errors hurt the Hornets (0-14, 0-8) in the game one loss; GC (5-5, 2-0) scored three unearned runs off of the eight SU miscues.

Senior Amanda Long (Antwerp, Ohio/IPFW) had two of the Hornets three hits in the lidlifter. She was 2 for 3 with a run scored while Shanel Fisher (Lutz, Fla./South Florida) drove in a run with a fourth inning fielder’s choice.

SU jumped out to a 4-0 lead in game two with a pair of runs in each of the first two innings but saw the Lady Pride break open a close game with 11 runs in the sixth inning.

Senior Erin May (Hagerstown, Md./Williamsport) and Lesley Beard (Youngstown, Ohio/Austintown Fitch) had RBI singles in the first and second innings, respectively. w

SU returns to the diamond against Eastern Mennonite on Tuesday afternoon for a non-league doubleheader.


Women’s Tennis

 

WINCHESTER , Va.  The SU women’s tennis team was unable to extend its Dixie win streak to three Sunday afternoon as No. 18 in the nation Methodist College took an 8-1 victory.

Shenandoah (4-3, 2-1) was able to win just one match on the afternoon; senior Wendy Legge (Stephens City, Va./Sherando) defeated Alison Friend 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3 singles.

Senior Jen McNeal (Verona, Va./Fort Defiance) was a 6-0, 6-0 loser at No. 1 singles to Elana Blanina, the nations’ top ranked Division III player.

Blanina and Carla Simpson, the No.1 ranked doubles team in Division III, defeated McNeal and Legge 8-1.

Men’s Tennis

 

WINCHESTER , Va. – The men’s tennis team was unable to earn its first victory of the spring as Methodist completed the doubleheader sweep with a 7-0 win.

SU (0-4, 0-3) came closest to winning at No. 1 doubles. The tandem of John Moczydlowski (Mohanon, Pa./Governor Mifflin) and KC Hatton (Alexandria, Va./Hayfield) lost 8-2 to Adam Hunter and Keith Kassouf.

The men return to the courts this Tuesday with a 3:00 non-conference match against Bridgewater College.
