WINCHESTER , Va. – The Shenandoah University baseball team failed in its bid to reach the .500 mark in Dixie Conference play Monday afternoon as Ferrum College defeated SU 13-4.

The Monday afternoon game was a makeup of a rained out contest from St. Patrick’s Day. Ferrum (13-4, 3-1) jumped out to a 3-1 lead after four innings and then broke open the contest with eight runs in the final two innings.

Shenandoah (8-14, 1-3) got its final three runs courtesy of a Brent Meixsell ( Saylorsburg , Pa. /Pleasant Valley) home run in the ninth. SU had gotten on the board in the fourth when Tommy Delaney (Fairfax Station, Va./Hayfield) singled home Dusty Crostic ( Chesterfield , Va. /LC Bird) from second base. Crostic reached on a throwing error by FC catcher Kevin Griffin.

As in the 1-0 loss to Ferrum on March 16, SU struggled against the Panthers pitching. Sophomore Thomas Meeks improved to 4-0 this season by tossing the complete game victory; he struck out 12 batters while scattering six hits and walking three.

Meeks was also the story offensively for Ferrum. He was 4 for 5 with an RBI and a run scored while Mickey Russell added four hits in four at-bats. Blaine Eanes provided the big blast for FC with his two-run home run to left center in the fourth.

Freshman Mike McVearry ( Bowie , Md. / South River ) fell to 3-3 this spring after giving up seven runs (seven earned) on 15 hits and three walks in 7.1 innings. Sophomore Tyler Gorman ( Alexandria , Va. /Hayfield) gave up the final six runs on six hits and two walks in 1.2 innings of action. McVearry also struck out two.
