WINCHESTER, Va. (March 28,
2001) - The Shenandoah University men's lacrosse
team fell for the third straight time Wednesday
afternoon as the Wesley College took an 18-6
decision in NCAA Division III men's lacrosse
action at Shenandoah.
Wesley (3-4) jumped on the
Hornets (1-4) for the first three goals of the
game and extended their lead to 8-1 by halftime.
Unfortunately for the hosts, after senior Joe
Krewson (Cambridge, Md./Cambridge) got SU on the
board with 2:46 to play in the first, Coach Brian
Jenkins' club was unable to find the back of the
net again until the final period.
Bryan Maracle (Akwesasne,
Mohawk Nation) led the Wolverines with three
goals and four assists while Josh Wyatt (Milton,
Del.) added three goals and an assist.
Krewson finished with three
goals and two assists, Matt Burton (Woodbridge,
Va./Woodbridge) chipped with a goal and an assist
while Kenny Gingerich (Stafford, Va./North
Stafford) and Chris Keller (Smithsburg, Md./Smithsburg)
had one goal apiece.
Shenandoah goes on the road
for the first time this spring with a contest at
Cabrini on Saturday. Face-off is at 3:30 pm.

Baseball
LEXINGTON, Va. - The SU
baseball team lost its third straight game
Wednesday afternoon as Washington & Lee
outlasted the Hornets 4-3 in non-league action at
Cap'n Smith Field in Lexington.
Washington & Lee (17-5)
combined the arm of freshman pitcher Mike Wert (Pittsburgh,
Pa./North Allegheny) with a three run second
inning to gain the victory over Shenandoah (11-10).
Pert scattered nine hits
and held the Hornets to just two earned runs
against seven strikeouts in pitching his second
complete game of the season.
The Hornets tied the game
in the second inning as sophomore catcher Chris
Zaia (Macungie, Pa./Emmaus) scored sophomore
first baseman Mike Gallagher (Springfield, Va./Hayfield)
on a sacrifice fly to leftfield.
The tie would be short
lived however, as the Generals assumed a 4-1 lead
in the bottom half of the second by producing
three RBI singles in four batters to chase
freshman starting pitcher J.R. Creamer (Lovettsville,
Va./Loudoun Valley) out of the game.
SU responded with two runs
in its next at-bat when sophomore shortstop Jake
Fiedler (Fairfax, Va./Chantilly) drove in a run
with a sacrifice fly and Gallagher singled left
to score senior centerfielder Tony Canterna (Linthicum,
Md./Anne Arundel CC). Canterna had reached base
on a single to left center.
Junior reliever Chris Kees
(Gore, Va./James Wood) held the Generals in check
for the rest of the game, hurling 6 1/3 perfect
innings. However, Wert matched Kees' scoreless
performance by only allowing three hits over the
final six frames and striking out the side in the
ninth to preserve the one-run victory.
