Women’s Lacrosse
WINCHESTER,
Va.
– The Shenandoah University women’s lacrosse team achieved its
first win of the season in style Friday afternoon as the Hornets
defeated
Hood
College
14-5.
The win also snaps a
fifteen game losing streak that stretches back to the 2000 season.
SU had last one when they defeated Hood 11-8 on
April
10, 2000.
Shenandoah (1-4) jumped
out to an early lead as senior Megan Tupper (
Bowie,
Md./Anne
Arundel CC) scored two unanswered goals within the first five
minutes of play. After
Hood scored two its own to get back to within one at 3-2, the
Hornets reeled off four unanswered to take a 7-2 lead into the
halftime lockerroom.
The second half brought
more of the same as sophomore Sharon Sparwasser, (Baltimore,
Md./Kenwood)
netted
three of her four goals and junior Christine LaTouche (Elkton,
Va./Spotswood) added two more to erase all doubt.
Tupper finished the
contest with a career high five goals and two assists for seven
points despite missing most of the first half after taking a shot in
the eye. Senior Loni Vance (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame) had a goal
and an assist while Lori Mattox (
Rocky
Mount,
Va./Franklin
County) and Heather Lethbridge (Belvidere,
N.J./Belvidere) each chipped with one goal each.
Freshman Joanna Eure
(Pillow, Pa./Upper Dauphin) led Shenandoah defensively with 10
groundballs.

Baseball
WINCHESTER
,
Va.
– The baseball team inched closer to .500 in
Dixie
play on Friday afternoon with a 6-2 victory over Greensboro
College.
Shenandoah (9-16, 2-3)
rode the pitching of junior Seth Foster (Alexandria,
Va./Hayfield)
to snap its three-game losing streak, a streak that started with an
11-4 loss to NC Wesleyan last Sunday. Foster went the distance in
the win; he scattered seven hits and two earned runs while striking
out nine and walking six. The win is the second straight for Foster
and evens his record at 3-3.
SU would get all of the
runs it would need in the second inning as the Hornets took
advantage of a pair of
Greensboro
(12-12, 1-4) errors to score three runs on just one hit. The Hornets
loaded the bases in the frame with a single, a walk and an error
before GC starter David Hilfstein hit two of the next three batters
to give SU a 2-0 lead.
Senior Jafar Alexander (San
Jose,
Calif./Wilcox)
made it 3-0 one batter later after classmate John Cowell (Devon,
Pa./Conestoga)
reached on the second
Greensboro
fielding error of the inning.
Junior Chris Zaia (Macungie,
Pa./Emmaus)
had three of the Hornets six hits on the day. He was 3 for 4 with a
run scored while Tyler Daniel (Richmond,
Va./JR
Tucker) and Dusty Crostic (Chesterfield,
Va./LC
Bird) each drove in a pair of runs.
Hilfstein took the loss
for GC. He gave up just six hits and two walks, but four Pride
errors led to five unearned runs for the Hornets.
Steven Smith and Bon
Schultz had two hits each for
Greensboro
while Donte Miles drove in two with a two-out single in the third.
