WINCHESTER
,
Va.
– Errors once again proved the Hornets downfall as Greensboro
College
salvaged a series split on Saturday afternoon with a 10-5 Dixie
Conference victory over homestanding Shenandoah.
Greensboro
(13-12, 2-4) got three runs in the second to take a lead they would
never relinquish and then built upon that advantage with run scoring
innings in the fourth, fifth and eighth.
SU (9-17, 2-4) committed
three errors that led to four unearned runs for the Pride and made a
loser out of starting pitcher Mike McVearry (Bowie,
Md./South
River). McVearry fell to 3-4
this spring after being chased in the middle of the fourth having
given up six runs (four earned) on five hits and two walks. He
struck out three.
The Hornets nearly
bailed McVearry out in their half of the fourth by scoring three
runs on three hits, but the rally stalled after Shenandoah got to
within one at 6-5. GC then put the contest away against reliever JR
Creamer (Lovettsville, Va./Loudoun Valley), touching the sophomore
for four runs on four hits. Two of the runs against Creamer were
unearned.
GC banged out 14 hits
against the three SU pitchers; eight of the nine
Greensboro
starters got at least one hit and six reached base safely on two
different occasions. Three
players: Jeremy Morrison, Kevin Mong and Mitchell Reckner, had two
hits and two RBI.
Josh Martin (2-0) earned
the win with a seven inning outing that featured six strikeouts
against eight hits, five runs (all earned) and one walk. Stephen
Knutson and Tim Hecker pitched a scoreless eighth and ninth,
respectively, for the Pride.
First baseman Tyler
Daniel (Richmond,
Va./JR
Tucker) led Shenandoah at the plate with his second straight two RBI
day. He was 2 for 4 on the afternoon. Designated hitter Shane Lloyd
(Alexandria, Va./Hayfield)
matched Daniel’s output with a 2 for 4 day that included two runs
scored.
