Softball Splits Doubleheader while Men's Lacrosse Falls to Goucher

WINCHESTER, Va. - The baseball team achieved its second doubleheader sweep of the season Wednesday evening with 10-0 and 20-0 victories over Christendom College. This is the first time in school history that SU has taken both ends of a doubleheader by shutout.

Sophomore righthander Seth Foster (Alexandria, Va./Hayfield) turned in a dominating performance in the lidlifter. Foster (2-2) struck out 10 while walking just one and did not allow a hit in five innings of action. SU just missed the third no-hitter in school history when freshman reliever Josh Copp (Winchester, Va./James Wood) gave up an infield single in the top of the sixth inning.

Senior Tony Canterna (Linthicum, Md./Anne Arundel CC) was 2 for 3 with two doubles and two RBI while freshman Tyler Daniel (Richmond, Va./J.R. Tucker) 2 for 3, 3 RBI day included his fifth home run of the season.

Game two brought more of the same as SU pounded out 20 runs on 12 hits in the five inning victory. Senior Jeremy Schutt (Annandale, Va./Prince George's CC) shook off the doldrums of a hitless first game to go 2 for 2 with 4 RBI on a home run and a double. Canterna continued his hot hitting with two more hits in two at-bats while catcher Shane Lloyd (Alexandria, Va./Hayfield) was also 2 for 2 with two runs batted in.

Freshman J.R. Creamer (Lovettsville, Va./Loudoun Valley) improved to 3-1 on the season by striking out seven while walking two and giving up three hits. Beckerink finished up on the mound; he allowed one hit and struck out three.

Men's Lacrosse

BALTIMORE, Md. – The men's lacrosse was unable to snap its losing streak Wednesday afternoon as Goucher College defeated SU 16-7.

Shenandoah, losers of five straight, is now 1-6 while Goucher improves to 8-2 with the victory.

The Hornets jumped on the board first on a goal by senior Joe Krewson (Cambridge, Md./Cambridge) at the 8:12 mark of the first but then saw the Gophers reel off the final nine goals of the half to take a 9-1 lead heading into the lockerroom.

After GC scored the opening goal of the second half, Shenandoah tallied five of the next six goals to close within five at 11-6 with 13:55 to play. Unfortunately, this would be as close as the visitors would get.

Krewson led Coach Brian Jenkins' club with three goals while freshman Elmer Baker (Fort Montgomery, N.Y./O'Neill) added two goals and an assist.

SU returns home this Saturday to face Mary Washington at 4:00. This game is the second in a men's/women's lacrosse doubleheader. The women open the day's action with a 2:00 contest against Christopher Newport.

Softball

WINCHESTER, Va. - The softball team got its second win of the season Wednesday afternoon with a 9-7 game two victory over Randolph Macon Woman's College. The Hornets (2-18) came back to achieve the split after losing game one 6-1.

SU scored six runs in the bottom of the fifth inning of game two to erase a 7-2 deficit. Sophomore Jennifer Jones (Radiant, Va./Madison County) keyed the victory with a perfect 4 for 4 day that also included three runs scored. Freshman Katey Wilson (Amissville, Va./Rapphannock) was 3 for 4 with an RBI while Amanda Coffman (Baker, W. Va./East Hardy) drove in three runs.

Freshman Jamie Sharpton (Stephenson, Va./Weber State) earned the win on the mound with a complete game performance. She gave up 11 hits and seven runs (five earned) while walking four and striking out one.

Errors hurt SU in game one; the Hornets five miscues led to three unearned runs for R-MWC. Shenandoah scored its only run in the third inning when sophomore Misty Towery (Martinsville, Va./Prince Edward) tripled and scored on a single by Amanda Long (Antwerp, Ohio/IU-Fort Wayne).
