Softball, Both Lacrosse Teams Lose

WINCHESTER, Va. (April 7, 2001) - The baseball team won its third straight game Saturday afternoon with a 16-2 drubbing of Dixie opponent NC Wesleyan.

Shenandoah (15-11, 3-6) spotted the Bishops (13-14, 3-6) the first run of the game but seized control with two runs in the fourth, three in the fifth and three more in the sixth. After NCWC scored its second run in the top of the eighth, SU came back in its half of the frame with eight runs to blow the game wide open.

Senior Jeremy Schutt (Annandale, Va./Prince George's CC) keyed the eighth inning rally with two solo home runs. Schutt led off the inning with a shot to left center and then completed the scoring with his seventh home run of the season, this one just over the leftfield fence.

In addition to Schutt's two dingers, sophomore Jake Fiedler (Fairfax, Va./Chantilly) also went yard. He hit a three run shot one pitch before Schutt's second home run.

Junior Chris Kees (Winchester, Va./James Wood) improved to 5-4 on the spring by tossing his fifth complete game of the season. Kees scattered eight hits and two walks while striking out eight in his second Dixie victory of the week.

These two teams will complete their Dixie series with a 1:00 start on Sunday.

Men's Lacrosse

WINCHESTER, Va. - Mary Washington College sent the SU men's lacrosse team down to defeat for the sixth straight time as Saturday afternoon with an 18-2 victory.

MWC (3-4) led 14-0 at the half and tallied the first goal of the third quarter before Shenandoah (1-7) got on the board with 2:20 to play in the period on an unassisted goal by Jeff Conley (Laurel, Md./Roosevelt).

Sophomore middie Randy Fulk (Annandale, Va.) led the Eagles with five points on a goal and four assists while Chris Doddridge (Springfield, Va.) and Joe Boulier (Vienna, Va.) each had three goals.

The Hornets received their other goal from junior Matt Burton (Woodbridge, Va./Woodbridge).

Shenandoah travels to Villa Julie on Tuesday for a 4:00 start.

Women's Lacrosse

WINCHESTER, Va. - The SU women's lacrosse team also came out on the short end of the stick Saturday afternoon; Christopher Newport defeated Shenandoah 12-7 in Dixie Conference action.

Shenandoah (0-3, 0-2) led on three different occasions in the first half but saw the Lady Captains (1-7, 1-1) score the final five goals of the period to take an 8-4 lead into intermission.

After sophomore Megan Tupper (Bowie, Md./Bowie) scored her second goal to bring SU within four at 11-7, but the Hornets could get no closer. Freshman Sharon Sparwasser (Baltimore, Md./Kenwood) led SU with four goals.

The Hornets travel to Trinity (DC) on Monday for a 4:30 contest.

Softball

WINCHESTER, Va. - The softball team fell to 2-20 overall and 0-6 in the Dixie on Saturday with 9-1 and 7-0 losses to NC Wesleyan.

SU banged out five hits in the game one loss; sophomore Nikki Braithwaite (Winchester, Va./James Wood) was 2 for 3 and drove in the Hornets only run. She drove in sophomore Jennifer Jones (Radiant, Va./Madison County), who had reached on a single.

Freshman Katey Wilson (Amissville, Va./Rappahannock) had Shenandoah's only hit in game two.

The Hornets host Methodist Sunday in a pair of Dixie Conference contests.

Golf

FRONT ROYAL, Va. - The golf team stands 11th after the first day of competition at the Virginia State Division II-III Championships at Shenandoah Valley Country Club.

Sophomore Dallas Strait (Greencastle, Pa./Greencastle) led the Hornets over the par 72, 6399 yard course with a 40-41--81. He is 29th overall.
