Chowan (0-6, 0-3) brought just four players to Sunday's match and was able to take only eight games in the six matches competed.

Senior Jen McNeal (Verona, Va./Fort Defiance) completed a perfect week at the top singles and doubles spots with two more victories. She was a 6-0, 6-0 winner over Carrie Collins in singles and paired with Wendy Legge (Stephens City, Va./Sherando) to win 8-1 in doubles.

Baseball

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The baseball team ran into a buzzsaw this past weekend in the form of No. 1 in the nation Methodist College and came up on the short end of 15-1 and 10-4 contests.

Shenandoah (9-22, 2-8 Dixie) saw the Monarchs (27-3-1, 7-2 Dixie) bang out 15 hits in Saturday’s 15-1 win. The Hornets were held to just three hits of their own, including a fifth inning double by Jafar Alexander (San Jose, Calif./Wilcox) that got the visitors only rally started.

Alexander led off the fifth with a double and then moved to third after Dusty Crostic (Chesterfield,Va./LC Bird) singled. Junior Rodney Wooden (Baltimore, Md./Woodlawn) then plated Alexander when he beat out the back end of a 4-6-3 double play attempt.

Sophomore JR Creamer (Lovettsville, Va./Loudoun Valley) took the loss after being chased in the middle of the fourth inning. Creamer was the victim of poor defense; SU committed five errors that led to 12 of the 13 runs against Creamer being unearned. MC had eight hits and drew four walks in the 3.1 innings that Creamer was on the mound.

Shenandoah had 11 hits in Sunday’s rematch, but it was not enough as Methodist had 12 in the 10-4 win. The Monarchs again wasted little time getting started offensively -- they took a 3-0 lead in the second on three hits and a hit batmen and never looked back.

Wooden, John Cowell (Devon, Pa./Conestoga) and Tyler Daniel (Richmond, Va./JR Tucker) all had two hits for SU. Wooden was 2 for 3 with a run scored, Cowell 2 for 5 with a run and an RBI and Daniel 2 for 4.

Junior Seth Foster (Alexandria, Va./Hayfield) fell to 3-4 this season after giving up seven runs (four earned) on nine hits and three walks in 4.2 innings. He struck out three.

Women’s Lacrosse

NEWPORT NEWS, Va./FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – The women’s lacrosse team battled tough, but came out on the losing end of two Dixie Conference lacrosse games this past weekend.

SU (1-6, 0-3) fell 15-4 to Christopher Newport on Saturday and then lost a heartbreaking, 8-7 decision at Methodist Sunday afternoon.

The Hornets received goals from four different players: Sharon Sparwasser (Baltimore, Md./Kenwood), Lori Mattox (Rocky Mount, Va./ Franklin County), Megan Tupper (Bowie, Md./Anne Arundel CC) and Christine LaTouche (Elkton, Va./Spotswood), in the loss to the Lady Captains (4-7, 3-0 Dixie).

Shenandoah put together possibly its best effort of the season in Sunday’s loss at Methodist. Down 8-2 midway though the first half, SU nearly pulled off the upset by scoring the final five goals of the game.  Sparwasser was the story on offense as she keyed the rally with four of her game high five goals on the day. LaTouche had the remaining two goals for the Hornets.

Sophomore Bridget Robbins (Baker, W. Va./East Hardy) had just seven saves in the loss, but did helped key the comeback by starting Shenandoah’s offense with a number of excellent clearing passes.
