WINCHESTER, Va. - The
baseball team received another dominating
pitching performance Sunday afternoon to complete
its first ever sweep of NC Wesleyan.
Sophomore Jake Fiedler (Fairfax,
Va./Chantilly) struck out 10 while scattering
seven hits and two runs to lead SU (16-11, 4-6)
to a 5-2 victory over NC Wesleyan (13-15, 3-7).
The win over NCWC is just the fourth in school
history; the 1999 National Champions have
defeated Shenandoah 19 of 24 times since SU
revived baseball in 1988.
Sunday's victory comes on
the heels of Saturday's 16-2 blowout victory.
That win was just the second ever at home for SU
over the Bishops.
When Fiedler tired in the
eighth, senior Jeremy Schutt (Annandale, Va./Prince
George's CC) nailed the door shut on NCWC with
two innings of nearly perfect relief. Schutt
struck out three and walked just one to earn his
third save of the spring.
The Hornets took the early
lead when junior John Cowell led off the
Shenandoah first with a solo shot to left center.
After NC Wesleyan took a 2-1 lead with a two out
rally in the top of the fourth, SU retook the
lead for good in the bottom of the sixth inning
when senior Tony Canterna (Linthicum, Md./Anne
Arundel CC) led off the frame with a solo home
run to right.
