Baseball
WINCHESTER,
Va.
– The SU baseball team snapped its five game losing skein
Wednesday afternoon with a 3-2 Dixie Conference victory over Chowan
College
in the lidlifter of an afternoon doubleheader.
Shenandoah
(10-23, 3-9
Dixie)
was unable to get the sweep as Chowan (23-11, 6-5) earned a 5-2
victory in the second contest.
The
Hornets achieved the game one triumph with their first ninth inning
comeback of the season. Down 2-1 after CC scored a run in the
eighth, SU scored the two runs it would need in its last at-bat on
four hits and an intentional walk.
Junior
Rodney Wooden (Baltimore,
Md./Woodlawn)
led off with a bloop to right center that the Braves lost in the
midday
sun. Wooden’s flare went for a double and he moved to third on
John Cowell’s (Devon,
Pa./Conestoga)
infield single.
Freshman
Matt MacDonald (Virginia
Beach,
Va./Princess Anne) tied the game one batter later by plating Wooden
with a single to center. With runners on second and third with one
out, Chowan coach Steve Flack then elected to intentionally walk
Chris Zaia (Macungie,
Pa./Emmaus)
and pitch to Tyler Daniel (Richmond, Va./JR Tucker).
Daniel,
who was 0 for 3 with two strikeouts to this point, made that
strategy moot as he lofted a long fly ball into the leftfield
corner. Faced with a no-win situation, Braves leftfielder Clint
Sanders allowed the ball to drop for the game winning single.
Sophomore
JR Creamer (Lovettsville,
Va./Loudoun
Valley) earned the win with a complete game outing that included
four strikeouts. He scattered five hits and two runs (one earned) as
he also stopped a personal five-game losing streak.
Unfortunately
for SU, the sweep was not to be as Randy Burden gave the Braves a
split with a solid game two performance. Burden improved to 4-2 on
the spring by holding the hosts to just one hit in 8.0 innings of
work while striking out 11. He allowed two runs on that one hit,
walked five and also hit one batter. Mike Harris took over for
Burden one batter into the ninth and shut the door on any comeback
hopes by striking out the side.
Daniel
drove in his second run of the afternoon with the second and final
Hornets hit in game two, a ninth inning double that scored Cowell
from first. Cowell led off the inning with a walk.

BRIDGEWATER

– Bridgewater College used a strong offensive output in the middle
three innings Wednesday afternoon to key a 10-4 victory in game one
of a non-league doubleheader. The Eagles (17-16) then won game two
9-1.
Shenandoah
(2-25) took a 3-2 lead in the top of the fourth inning of game one,
but saw BC answer with four runs in the bottom of the frame and then
seal the contest with another four one inning later.
Junior
Jennifer Jones (Radiant, Va./Madison County) led SU with a 2 for 3
day that included a two-run double in the fourth.
The
Hornets were held to just three hits in the nightcap; Nikki
Braithwaite (Winchester,
Va./James
Wood) was 1 for 2 with a double and the lone run scored.
