Baseball Falls 7-3 to Averett For More Information Contact: Scott

DANVILLE, Va. (April 13,
2001) - The Friday the 13th jinx hit
the baseball team this afternoon as the squad
lost 7-3 to Averett in Dixie Conference action.
SU (16-12, 4-7) lost for
the first time in four games and for just the
second time ever to Averett (21-10, 7-4). The
Hornets, who had not lost to the Cougars in the
last 10 meetings, now hold a 12-2 advantage in
the all-time series.
The game was over virtually
before it started as Averett touched starting
pitcher Jake Fiedler (Fairfax, Va./Chantilly) for
three runs in the bottom of the first inning.
Fiedler fell to 4-5 on the year after giving up
seven runs on 11 hits in five innings. Senior
Jeremy Schutt (Annandale, Va./Prince George's CC)
pitched three scoreless innings of relief; he had
five strikeouts against just two hits.
Shenandoah banged out 11
hits in the loss. Four of five players who
reached base safely had two hits apiece. Schutt,
Tony Canterna (Linthicum, Md./Anne Arundel CC)
and Tommy Delaney (Fairfax Station, Va./Hayfield)
were all 2 for 4 while John Cowell (Devon, Pa./Conestoga)
and Adam Beckerink (Lakewood, N.Y./Jamestown CC)
were both 2 for 5. Beckerink also drove two runs
on the day.
