DANVILLE, Va. (April 13, 2001) - The Friday the 13th jinx hit the baseball team this afternoon as the squad lost 7-3 to Averett in Dixie Conference action.

SU (16-12, 4-7) lost for the first time in four games and for just the second time ever to Averett (21-10, 7-4). The Hornets, who had not lost to the Cougars in the last 10 meetings, now hold a 12-2 advantage in the all-time series.

The game was over virtually before it started as Averett touched starting pitcher Jake Fiedler (Fairfax, Va./Chantilly) for three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Fiedler fell to 4-5 on the year after giving up seven runs on 11 hits in five innings. Senior Jeremy Schutt (Annandale, Va./Prince George's CC) pitched three scoreless innings of relief; he had five strikeouts against just two hits.

Shenandoah banged out 11 hits in the loss. Four of five players who reached base safely had two hits apiece. Schutt, Tony Canterna (Linthicum, Md./Anne Arundel CC) and Tommy Delaney (Fairfax Station, Va./Hayfield) were all 2 for 4 while John Cowell (Devon, Pa./Conestoga) and Adam Beckerink (Lakewood, N.Y./Jamestown CC) were both 2 for 5. Beckerink also drove two runs on the day.

A complete box score can be found at http://www.su.edu/athletics/bb/2001/041301.htm

The two teams complete their series with a 1:00 Saturday contest.
