– The softball team doubled last season’s win total Saturday
afternoon with as it swept Gallaudet University with a pair of 3-2
victories.
SU (4-25) came from
behind in both games. In game one, Shenandoah scored single runs in
the sixth and seventh innings to get the win while Amy Black (Portsmouth,
Va./Woodrow
Wilson)
and Amanda Long (Antwerp,
Ohio/IPFW)
each had RBI singles in the sixth inning of game two.
Long was the beneficiary
of the offensive heroics; she earned the victory on the mound in
both games by surrendering just nine total hits and four runs (one
earned). She also had five strikeouts, four of which came in the
opener.
SU achieved the game one
victory in its final at-bat when Jen Jones (Radiant, Va./Madison
County) trotted home from third base on Jodi Milburn’s (Winchester,
Va./Lord
Fairfax)
single to left.
All nine starters had at
least one hit in the opener; Milburn was 2 for 4.
In addition to her RBI
single in the second contest, Long was 3 for 4 with an RBI in game
one. She finished a combined 6 for 8 with two RBI and a run scored.

Shenandoah completes its
regular season schedule Sunday afternoon with a Dixie Conference
doubleheader against Ferrum.
Women’s Tennis
ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. - The SU women's tennis team clinched its first winning
season in over 10 years Saturday afternoon with an 8-1 victory over
NC Wesleyan.
Shenandoah (8-6, 4-3) had not won more than four matches in a season since
joining the
Dixie
in 1993, and the closest it came to a winning season was a 2-5
campaign in 1992.
Senior Jen McNeal (Verona, Va./Fort Defiance) once again was a double winner for SU. McNeal
clinched the No. 2 seed at next week's Dixie Conference Tournament
with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Catherine Gorrell at No. 1 singles.
McNeal and Wendy Legge (Stephens City, Va./Sherando) won 8-4 at the
top doubles spot; they will be at least a No. 3 seed at the
tournament.
SU is now off until traveling to the Dixie Tournament in
Newport News
next Friday. Seeds will be announced Friday evening.

Men’s Tennis
ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. – Coach
Brandon Padgett’s men’s team ran its winning streak to three
Saturday afternoon with a 7-0 shutout of
Dixie
foe NC Wesleyan.
SU (3-8, 3-4) clinched a best
ever fifth place finish in the league with the victory. The Hornets
had never finished higher than sixth before this season.
Senior John Moczydlowski (Mohannon,
Pa./Governor Mifflin) won his third match of the week with a 6-1,
6-4 victory at No.1 singles over Eric Allen. SU lost only the No. 1
doubles match; Moczydlowski and KC Hatton (Alexandria,
Va./Hayfleld)
fell 8-6.

Hornets travel to
Goucher
College
on Wednesday for a non-league match.
Women’s
Lacrosse
FERRUM,
Va. – The SU women’s lacrosse team was unable to hold a one goal
lead Saturday afternoon at Ferrum College as the host Panthers came
back for a 7-5 victory.
Shenandoah
(2-8, 0-4) now must travel to Ferrum on Tuesday afternoon for a
Dixie Conference Tournament quarterfinal round matchup. The winner
of that contest will then face regular season champion Christopher
Newport on Saturday at Shentel Stadium at 1:00
in the tournament semis.
No. 2
seed
Greensboro
will take on No. 3 seed Methodist in Saturday’s other semi-final.
After
Ferrum (2-5, 1-3) scored two of the first three goals of the game,
SU rallied behind goals from Sharon Sparwasser (Baltimore,
Md./Kenwood) and Holly Mansfield (Martinsburg, W. Va./Hedgesville)
to take a 3-2 lead at halftime. The Hornets also had two goals
called back for crease violations.
The
two teams stayed within one goal of another until FC took its first
two goal lead at 6-4 with just under 10 minutes to play. Sparwasser
scored again two minutes later to bring the visitors to within one,
but Carrie Conques iced it for the Panthers with her third and final
goal of the afternoon with
3:00
left.
