DANVILLE, Va. - The
baseball team came back Saturday afternoon to win
4-2 and to gain a split of its weekend Dixie
series with Averett in the process.
Shenandoah (17-12, 5-7
Dixie) received another outstanding pitching
performance from junior Chris Kees (Gore, Va./James
Wood). Kees outdueled 2000 NCAA Division III
Pitcher of the Year Jason Dooley to win his sixth
game of the season and second in as many outings
against Dooley. Kees struck held Averett (21-11,
7-5) to just four hits on the day and struck out
seven against five walks. He held the Cougars
scoreless for the first six innings and the
punctuated the victory with a strikeout for the
last out of the contest.
After the two pitchers held
the hitters in check for the first four frames,
the Hornets finally broke through with two runs
in the fifth and one more in the sixth. Shortstop
John Cowell (Devon, Pa./Conestoga) led off the
fifth with a single and scored the first run of
the game on a Tony Canterna (Linthicum, Md./Anne
Arundel CC) sacrifice fly. SU made it 2-0 when
Jeremy Schutt (Annandale, Va./Prince George's CC)
tripled into the gap in leftcenter and then came
home on an RBI single by Jake Fiedler (Fairfax,
Va./Chantilly).
Catcher Shane Lloyd (Alexandria,
Va./Hayfield) was 3 for 4 while Cowell and Schutt
both had two hits each.

Women's
Lacrosse
WINCHESTER, Va. - The SU
women's lacrosse team was unable to find the win
column again on Saturday afternoon as the squad
dropped a 10-9 Dixie Conference decision to
Ferrum College.
Shenandoah (0-6, 0-3) saw
its best chance to earn its first win of the
season slip away as Ferrum (2-6, 2-1) got a goal
from Karen Helton (Chester, Va.) with 44 seconds
to play to give the Lady Panthers the lead for
the final time of the game.
After SU scored the opening
goal of the contest on an unassisted tally from
freshman Sharon Sparwasser (Baltimore, Md./Kenwood),
the two teams traded goals back and forth for
entire way. Neither team led by more than one
goal all afternoon long and the game was tied for
the majority of the 60 minutes.
Sparwasser led the Hornets
with four goals while Angela Daniel (Charlottesville,
Va./William Monroe) added two. Sparwasser's
fourth straight hat trick caps a week in which
she scored 11 goals in three games.
SU hosts Hollins on
Thursday before entering play as the No. 4 seed
at next weekend's Dixie Conference Tournament.
Shenandoah will face top seeded Greensboro at 2:00
before Ferrum and host Christopher Newport play
at 4:00.
